I'm young, 15 years old. I am around 5' 7 and around 150. I am pretty active. I go to the gym about 3 times a week for weight training, and I try to run/walk at least 2 miles a day. I also take part in sports teams like softball and field hockey. The problem is, that it seems no matter what I do I can't seem to get the weight off. I have very low self-esteem and am constently thinking about my weight and body image. I gained a lot of weight all at once about a year ago and wasn't doing any physical activity, which seems to have left me with stretch marks and cellulite; which is embarrasing when I have to go to the beach with friends and other things. If anyone would like to give me advice or anything I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

Hi,
I also started gaining a lot of weight during the puberty years. I walked and jogged every day, did some weight training, and ate a pretty healthy diet, but still gained the weight. I believe that this is a common phase all women go through. I use to weigh 145. I'm 20 now, 5'7, and currently about 130 pounds. I noticed my weight decress as I matured into adulthood. It's weird. My sister went through a similar phase. I believe that this is your body adjusting. Just eat healthy, exercise regulary, and I'm sure you'll get there. :) take care, good luck!

Also, since you're very physical you have more muscle mass. So that accounts for some of your weight. As long as you feel healthy and take care of yourself, that's all that matters. Don't look too much at the scale :)

Leah, Congratulations! You're doing the right things by getting active. You must first love, respect yourself and act accordingly. What about your eating habit? Is it healthy? Exercise alone is not enough to lose weight, your diet has to be a healthy one as well. Sporadic indulgence is acceptable, but overall, you must adopt healthful eating. Instead of high calorie foods, why don't you try vegies or fresh fruit for desert or snack. If you drink milk, opt for 1% or skim milk. Eat varities of foods - grains, lean protein, low fat dairy products, vegies or fruits - in reasonable portions. Most important of all, eat to nourish your body, not for excessive pleasure. Start today to see yourself as a slim, beautiful, warm, friendly and confident person. Weight loss is about both physical and mental gains.
Good luck and enjoy life!

Leah,
Just by visiting this board and posting your question shows you are already off and going on your efforts. The good news is since you are 15, you are still growing so you will automatically look better on the charts as your height increases. Since you are working out and watching your diet, you will be just fine. Just hang in there. You have a hold of the problem now....just don't let it follow you into your adult years.
You will do fine...just keep doing things right!

It's really quite normal for a girl your age to be somewhat overly concerned about body image. It's part of growing up.
At any rate, other than the actual number itself (which by the way, is within normal range for a female your height, and in the bigger scheme of true fitness does not really account for much), what is it about your body built that you are particularly concerned about? Are you bothered by your shape and the way clothes made for girls your age fit you? I've brought this up because a lot of girls who are genetically programmed to have the curvy, hour-glass figure as full-grown women are the ones who have a hard time during their teens, when a lot of their peers have the the rather straight, runway model-like built, making these "blooming curvies" look relatively "fat,' when in fact they are not. The fact that a lot of teen clothing are made to fit the "ruler' body type does not help.
If this is the case with you, then you should change your approach towards your look. Work with your body type and not against it. Find clothes that accentuate your natural body shape (aka, if JLo did not know how to dress her curves, she'd just be another chunky girl, would'nt she?) and make you look tall and sleeker. This might mean shopping at the "older" people's department, but you'd be surprised at some of the funky clothes you can find. Also, try Pilates as an exercise - it streamlines the body and makes for a longer leaner look.
At any rate, even though its normal to be concerned about body image, try not to be depressed about it, okay? At any rate, you seem to be approaching the issue the right way with increasing your physical activity.
As for the stretch marks and cellulite, they will be there no matter what (the cellulite might decrease with weight loss). The trick is to learn to accept them (a lesson in adulthood, I'm afraid), and of course camouflage them (lol)! But most of all, just to aim at not to make them any worse than they are, and I believe you are working on that.
