I cannot get over the food journal hurdle. I write down what I eat one two days tops..then nothing. Why is this soooo hard for me??
I know its the right thing to do. I know I cant change my bad habits until I identify them BUT I just cant stick to it.. : (
it makes me sad

first stop using the word "can`t"...If all you can do at this point is one day then aim for 1 day plus breakfast the next day....I have a hard time keeping food journals with fitday even tough it does everything for me ...I prefer the journal at home that I can write quotes , toughts etc..in it...
When I first started almost 3 years ago, I would list one positive thing a day I had done towards gaining a new lifestyle...Some days it was simple such as "I drank an extra glass of water" it was all I could do that day but it was better then nothing ...Being too hard on yourself won`t help anything...
You have to view this new lifestyle as a seed that was just planted...It will need days of the right environnement before you seed a seedling then it will have tobe taken care off before it can grow...
I know you have it in you, start believeing in yourself...YOU CAN DO IT...G

I think part of it is denial. We ALL know we overeat. But to have it written down ... looking back at us ... ya baby you ate ALL that. It's embarassing, uncomfortable.
On the other hand ... to see a good day, good cals, low fat, healthy nutrients, staring back at you, all lit up on fitday .... that's an awesome feeling.
Keep starting new. It'll come.
I have a quote of yours that I'm gonna challenge ****I know I cant change my bad habits until I identify them **** I'm not sure about that. We often have reflective threads here and folks often post "OMG, I used to do that and I didn't even realise until you said it"
I say move ahead.

Make it fun, use fitday (fitday.com). It's a free service and it keeps track of everything for you, like fats, carbs, protein, how many calories you've eaten and even things like nutrition and how much you're getting from your foods.
I know exactly what you're saying, writing down my foods on a tablet was so boring I couldn't do it for more than 2 or 3 days and I'd quit. But then I found this board and was told about fitday and I've been in love ever since, lol.
It's REALLY not as hard as you think once you get into a habit. I used to hate keeping track of everything I ate. Now I can't even fathom the thought of going one day without recording everything. I'm sure not everyone is as anal as I am about keeping track of calories, but several of the people on this board use fitday. I mean "anal" as in I'm careful about my calories. Heck, I was even teased for counting lettuce, lol. But the REASON I count everything, including lettuce and onions and the like, is because I want all of the nutrients from what I'm eating counted as well. Yes, even the nutrients in 1 oz. of onions.
Try fitday, seriously. Once you get used to using it, you won't want to go a day without it :)
(sheez, I sound like a commercial, lol)

I'm with Lee on this one. Sometimes people may avoid writing (counting)because they really don't want to take personal respnsibility, or becasue they fear that their worst suspicions are true. However - they may be surprised to discover that they actually ate less then what they thought! It is funny how guilt and shame work. Those 2 emotions can prevent us from discovering our successes, undermine our psyche, and lead to our downfall!

You all are so right. There is nothing I cant do. Maybe I need to change both my attitude and my approach.
small steps. Beginning tomorrow I will track breakfast. Once I get breakfast down, I'll add lunch then snacks..etc until its just another thing that I do like brushing my teeth and exercising
thanks for the support

I was having this same problem last month. I asked everyone here how they kept track of their calories, and they all gave me different answers.
I never ever liked to write what I ate into a journal. It was annoying.
So what I did after I got ideas from everyone was bought a 3 X 5 notecard box and a giant pack of notecards, and I dated each notecard. Every morning I take out a notecard, write my weight at the top corner, and then any time I eat something I write it down on one of the lines and then put the calories in next to it.
If I don't know how many calories something has, I jut make a note to go online and check at the end of the day. And since I end up having to eat out a lot, it helps to just write it down and look it up later.
And at the end of the day, I total my calories, and put the notecard back in the box and forget about it. I won't look at it again until the end of the month to see what my eating patterns were like and how I could improve them.
It's a lot easier for me than a journal or using a computer program. And you can carry a notecard in our purse anywhere you go.
Well... that was a long idea. It works great for me since I'm always on the go. Maybe you could try it for a few weeks and see if it's easier for you than a journal.

Ummm... funny is good right now.
But I'm sure next season some editor at Cosmo magazine will says that having a sense of humor is no longer the "in" thing.
