Why is it that when you are trying to loose weight everyone says that you should drink lots of water. Does that really help you loose the weight? What is the point of drinking water?

Hi Courtney,
Our body cannot function efficiently when it is not well hydrated. Therefore, dehydration can also slow down your metabolism. If your body is not getting enough water, it might not be burning calories at an optimal rate.
Best regards,

Everyone seems to say we need 8 glasses of water a day. Some people say that juice, milk, etc. count and that caffeinated drinks only count one half. But no one can say where the number 8 came from. That number seems to be a myth. Certainly the amount of water we need must depend on our age, activity, size, climate and so on.
Water is neccessary and healthy and 8 is probably the right number for most of us, but I don't think water is as important as exercise and diet.

Some of the reasons you would want to drink water for weightloss...
Replacing high calorie beverage with water will save you tones of calorie.
When you exercise and sweat, you need to replace the water you`ve loss.
By drinking water you keep your kidneys fonctionning better so you don`t retain as much fluids.
Sometimes when you think you are hungry drinking water will help you decide whether you were only thirsty or if you actually need to eat something.
When going out to eat I try to drink a bottle of water on the way there, this helps me retain control of my food order and avoid odering everything on the menu cause I so starbing...
Now there is a lot of debate on how much water you should drink... Instead of counting glass for glass now I have an easier way of figuring if I`m taking in enough water(by drinking water, tea, having soup etc,,) The fact is when I have to use the facilities and do so with no problem then I know I have enough water, if on the other hand you find the urine dark, strong meaning concentrated then you should increase your water intake to keep your body working better...Hope this help..Leanbutt

I don't take the standard "drink 8 cups of water a day" advice very seriously, and I don't think for one minute that I am dehydrated!! I just read a report a week or two ago written by a medical doctor who also questions the standard recommendation of 8 cups of water per day. He thought it was not necessary to drink anywhere near that much. In his view, our food contains plenty of water, and the water content of the other things we drink counts too. According to him, even though coffee is said to be dehydrating, and tea too (to a lessor extent), the amount of water in them is still enougb to add somewhat to our water intake. Actually, if I add up the 2 (or very occasionally 3) cups of very weak green tea I have in the course of a day, my one daily cup of coffee that I have first thing every morning, the one full glass of orange juice I have every day, the liquid part of the one cup of skim milk I have every morning, as well as adding in the water that's in the cartload of fruits and veggies I eat, and in the soup I sometimes have for lunch, well, perhaps he is right, as that seems quite a lot of liquid. I don't ever seem able to drink more than 3 or 4 cups of water a day, and perhaps the other liquids I have mentioned are the reason. I show no sign of dehydration, my waterworks are OK (and clear in colour), my skin looks fine, and I sweat profusely when I jog!
Have a good week, Cheers, Dee

Yes water is important to life and weight loss. But drinking a gallon of water every day isn't going to help you one bit. Drink water so that your kidneys can do their job. Drink enough so that your urine is a very light yellow - no lighter no darker.
