Author: Tangerine

Losing weight seems like the hardest thing that I have ever tried to do in my life. Food is my comfort and not only has it been a comfort to me, it has destroyed my whole life. I can't accept the person that I have became and no one else can accept me either. I have been rejected so much by people till I am at the point of rejecting my own self "sound crazy huh..." I am a 29-year-old female and I need help. I have an addiction and my addiction is over-eatting. Over-eatting is my addiction and food is my medication. Food help me cope with some of this pain and angry that I have inside from gaining all this weight. The terrible thing about the whole situation is "I feel good while I'm eatting and feel bad as he-- after I'm finished." It doesn't help to reach out for help because people criticize and judge me. I know that I need to stop eatting the way that I do but I need something or someone to hold on to. I have so much pain in me, I really don't know which way to turn. Losing weight seem impossible to do and I need help. Any suggestions is better than no suggestions at all. Please give me helpful advice!!!!!!

Hello Tangerine,

First, no one will judge you here because we are all in this same fight together. I know how it is to have food as comfort. My childhood was a mess and eating is one place I felt good. Know that weight loss is not impossible. There are many here that have felt the same as you and have fought hard each day to lose just a little. I started my journey more than a year ago from 367 pounds. I'm now just under 300. I have a while to go but I've accepted 2 things that really makes a difference.

1) I am a good person.

2) In time with effort, the weight will go.

It's not hopeless, don't defeat yourself. Instead, start small. I'll help you out by suggesting that for this week, write down everything you eat. Be very detailed, including little nibbles. If you know the calorie count of what you are eating, note that too including the size. At the end of the week, take a look at it and think what little things you can remove. Drinking sodas? Try diet cokes and even replace a coke a day with a least 6 oz of water. Work your way up slowly. Drop the heavy salad dressing for something lighter. Read lables.

We will help in any possible way.

Hi Tangerine,

Welcome to the board. I hope you realize that many of us have felt/feel EXACTLY the way you feel. We're all in the same boat.

Losing weight is also the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. The first thing you need to do is what ken suggested. Write down everything you eat so you can get an idea of what your eating habits are. My first realization was that I was eating way too much food each day. Of course I knew this.

By counting calories in all the foods you eat you can limit how much you are eating. Set a daily calorie limit and try not to go over it. Counting calories is just a tool to use to limit how much you eat each day.

Remember it's going to take some time but if you eat less food each day and get a little exercise you CAN lose weight.

Welcome to the board. You are not alone. Have you considered counseling? While weight loss can be hard it's not impossible. You can do it! Do what Ken said with the food journal. Get some exercise even it's a walk around the block everyday. Stick around here! Keep posting.

Read the board everyday and keep posting. These people are great here and they have really good advice. Good luck! You're already past the first step---realizing you have a problem and you want to fix it.

Welcome to the board Tangerine!

Though I agree somewhat with the above posters about keeping a food journal and counting calories - I didn't do that in the very beginning, when I had over 100 pounds to lose.

Instead, when I wanted to eat, I chose healthy food alternatives for the higher-fat, higher-sugar versions. Instead of chips, pretzels. Instead of ice cream, low-fat yogurt, etc...you get the picture. Can you still be overweight eating these foods - of course! However, when you have over 100 pounds to lose, just changing to eating healthier will automatically get you to lose some weight at first.

Make more changes after that. Be sure to get 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Start exercising.

I didn't start exercising until 2 months into my diet. I didn't start counting calories until I had lost about 80 pounds. I count calories off and on now. If I start to gain a couple of pounds, I watch what I'm eating and count calories until I get back down again. If you really listen to your body, it will tell you when it's hungry and when it's not, but, it takes time to learn how to understand this, especially when you're extremely overweight.

It took me 2 1/2 years to lose 130 pounds. You have to have patience with yourself. In the past 2 1/2 years I've had more than my fair share of binges and "going off the wagon". I remember being stressed out once and eating a whole chocolate cake!! One Christmas I ate a whole bag of chocolate chip cookies by myself! I beat myself up for a minute or two, then shrugged my shoulders, realized my mistake, and got "back on the wagon" right then. We're all human. We all make mistakes.

So, be patient. You will lose it. It will take time - and don't give up!

Trust me, I think that mostly everyone on this board knows how you feel. I myself am a beginner. This morning I stepped on a treadmill - the first time I have done anything remotely athetic in years. It was supremely difficult. But tomorrow I am going to do it again.

Determination and willpower I think are big things. The choice to truly commit. If food is your comfort (and I can understand that, food can be like a friend, when no one else is there), then you need to replace it with something healthy. I am no psychologist, however i have some ideas.

What feelings drive you to eat? Does it make you happy when you feel sad? Does it make you calm when you are angry? Does it comfort you when you are lonely? What does food mean to you? Does it keep you alive, or does it keep you sane?

What else can you do to comfort yourself in a healthy manner?
(eg. nice warm bath, lying on the sofa wrapped in a blanket with your favorite movie on...)

And here is a very, very important question in my opinion:

What do you want that your weight is keeping you from getting now?
Is it worth giving up that bowl of ice cream before bed (a favorite of mine)?

I know you are looking for answers here. But perhaps you should start by asking yourself the right questions.

Here is a question for you, one that I ask myself every day:

If a year from now you were more fit than you ever have been, would it be worth all the things that you had to endure to acheive it?

I'll be your diet buddy. =c)
