Hi everyone,
I was just wondering, yesterday, I ate 1300 calories OVER what I was supposed to (so essentially I ate 2 days worth of food in one day)...
What do you guys do when you binge? Do you try and make up for it the next day --- or over a period of 4 days, like subtract 300 cals for 4 days?
Since weight loss is an exact science, with 3500 cals = 1 pound, if I don't make up for it, won't it set me back really far???
Please let me know what to do... I am on a deadline b/c of my wedding!
thanks,
Melissa

Hi Melissa,
I recommend just getting back to your normal routine (1300 calories a day) without trying to make up for it. If you start subtracting 300 calories per day, this will leave you with 1000 calories, which is too low and will make you hungry. If you are constantly hungry, you are much more likely to binge AGAIN.
I guess you could subtract 100 calories per day, and eat 1200 calories... but then again, I think it's better to not dwell on your binge, and just return to your regular healthy eating plan.
These 1300 calories will set you back by a third of a pound, which is really not that much...
Best regards,
Melanie

Well if I did that I would personally fast for a day and then go back to the diet. Sometimes I don't think it is good to drag out and punish yourself for too long. Taking 300 calories off per day stretches the punishment out for 4 days and some. If you can cope with that fine, but myself I would rather clean out the stuff I over ate and go on an all day fruit and water type cleansing than drag it out for four days. Others may feel that they would rather take the amount of calories you suggested off each meal for four days or so, but to me after four days when you come off your penance you may go a little overboard again after feeling even more deprived for so long. To my mind, if you get it over in one day and just eat fruit and water it kind of redresses the balance of eating two days worth of food in one day also, and the day after, I would then get back to my diet and adhere to it.
I would not make a regular habit of binging either, and to my mind, if you know you have to do a day without food when you have over indulged like that to get back on track it will act as a deterrant also in a sense.
Also have one day in the week were you eat one meal that is what you want to eat. A cheat meal. I read this somewhere. It works too, and you always have that one thing to look forwards to on that certain day. if you want to you can cut fat and colaories for most of the day and then enjoy that one meal so that you don't feel quite so bad after eating it. If you don't do things like this, then you feel deprived and binge I feel. In other words once you get on a roll, you eat everything in site and think, "Ahh well thats that ruined for the day--may as well pig out completely now."

If you binge, you should just resume the next day with your regular diet. Don't worry about it! Fasting is never a good idea. You are making things worse by fasting. Those extra 1300 calories you ate are more likely to be held onto because your body is in starvation mode when you fast. It also lowers your metabolism, which is not at all what you want to do. I for one don't binge, but on the weekends I loosen up my diet and eat some of my favorite not so healthy foods. It has never affected me in 6 1/2 months! But, because of my strict diet and exercise program M-F, my metabolism has increased, and that can allow you to consume some extra calories on the weekend.

I think we are talking about fasting in the sense that you eat nothing. i was talking about cleansing more than fasting. By that I meant eating natrual whole foods and raw vegies and increasing water intake. I have done that occasionally in the past as it cleansse the bowel and intestine through of toxins, helps your kidneys and liver to cleanse out any toxins also. This then helps you to digest food properly and also once you have cleansed, you derive the nutirents better from your food as it passes through the bowel. Sometimes if there is a build up of sludge, this does not happen as well as it should. That is why I have done it in the past before I actually start on any diet and if I have over indulged. One or two days of that is not going to harm anyone. Neither does your body hold onto fat as you are getting fat in the way of nuts and seeds which are better for you. Over indulgence and crappy metabolism are just as likely to make you hang on to fat than going a few days on a cleasing diet such as I mentioned. I havesometimes only eaten grapes on the first day to kick the cleasing off and then gone to the brown rice and seeds and nuts the days after. Brown rice acts as a cleanser for the bowel. In fact short grain brown rice is the staple food for a detox diet because it has a much larger surface area than long grain rice and more b vitamins too. It's broken down easily and diegested and absorbs toxins as it passes through the bowel. if you imagine that you have a large empty jar of honey, still a little honey left clinging to the sides of the jar. If you fill it up with water the contents would be murky. However, if you kept pouring clean water into the jar it would eventually be clean. It would take a long time though. Imagine though filling the jar with something that would instantly render the contents of the jar clear. That is what brown rice does to your gut on a detox diet. It cleans everything out that has accumulated. It also leaves tour gut a frindly place in which the healthy bacteria can grow. Those bacteria are what help you to extract more vitamins out of your food. So it would totally enhance the start of a healthy diet in doing the detox I had in mind. Also, to know what it is like to go through that detox, it is very cleansing and you would just think twice about putting sludge there and the wrong stuff there less often. You can feel quite flaky and crap at first if you do it for a few days as when the toxins are clearing out, they are concetrated in the blood at certain points and this causes headache and stuff. However, the benefits are good thereafter where taking good ness from your food is concerned. I do it once a month now for 2-3 days and I time it on the weekend--from Friday onwards to Sunday night.
I guess a true fast is not doing anything at all in that way where food and water is concerned. But the above is good if you have over indulged and need to clear out a little first and good feng shui ...has been for me anyway.

All the foods you mentioned, are what should be in your diet anyway. One day of binge eating, or eating some not so healthy foods, is not enough to go on a cleansing diet. Eating the right veggies that are high in fiber, and also fiber rich cereals, grains etc, should be part of your normal diet. Drinking a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day should also be part of your normal diet. I think a cleansing diet is necessary for people who don't eat right on a regular basis. I was told by a doctor that a cleansing diet should be done each season, for those who don't eat right. So in my opinion, a cleansing diet is a good idea, but only for those who don't have a normal healthy diet. If you are on a healthy diet to lose weight, and you have one bad day of eating, I don't think a cleansing diet is necessary.

I'm just thinking that a few people eat diet stuff that is ready prepared and sometimes it may be full of preservatives and that although low in fat, it is still high in toxins. I mean I am avoiding those at the moment but a lot of people use those products but I guess a few may not. The description of someone continually pouring clear water in a jar lined with honey is the effect you get when starting on a healthy diet without cleansing first though. Although your putting clean in, it takes longer to clear out. Whereas kicking off with a detox would be a nice lead up to the healthy diet. Some people drink a great deal of caffeine and tea or low calorie cola and other products that are not high fat or anti-diet but which are just as likely to be accumulated by the body--even on a diet. Even though I have cut my caffeine intake right down now, I would still do a detox every now and again to keep everything working optimally. Sometimes years of stuff can be accumulated and the less you have to clear out, the less headaches and yucky feeling you get when doing a detox.
