Does anyone know which is better for an intense calorie burning workout, a treadmill or stationary bike?...I was thinking about buying one or the other to use over the winter, but I want to know what I'm getting into if I'm going to invest that kind of money into a piece of equipment....

I'm not sure. I feel like I get more of a workout on the treadmill because I can move my upper body along with my lower. On a bike you generally only move your legs (stationary bike, that it.)
I do like the bikes, and they're great for while you are watching TV and stuff like that. But I feel like I get more work done on a treadmill.

I believe it depends upon which one you would use the best. When I did the calculations on the calories burned website, I get 303 for the treadmill (at 4 mph) and 454 on the stationary bike (at a light pace). So at this level, it would appear that the bike would be the best tool.
However, once you start to incline and speed up the treadmill, the numbers switch. If you want to begin a running program, go for the treadmill, if you want to start biking, go with the bike. The most important thing is to get the one that you will use often.
I use both, normally in the same workout. Yesterday, I did 12 miles on the bike, then jumped on the treadmill for a 3.5 mile run. It was cardio day.

I always use the bike as sort of my cool down excersize. With the tredmill I can up intensity to burn more calories.... but it all depends on you... I say choose whatever you are more comfortable with... you're more likely to up intensity with something familiar than with something you feel uneasy about.

I would suggest an elliptical first, then a treadmill and a staionary bike would be my last choice.

It's a machine where the foot pads are connected to a wheel and you ride it...it's low/no impact on your joints and you can increase and decrease the resistnace and incline. It's almost all I use for cardio.

You can peddle backwards, and forwards! to work legs!

I would love to have one at home, my boss (who constantly complains about her weight, but doesn't change her eating habits, or exercise) has one and she has it in her garage! I told her I would store it at my house (so I can use it!) She didn't go for that!

I was reading you guys' responses about the elliptical, and I just noticed that the way you described it makes it sound a lot like a bike ("you ride it"). All I had to add is that when you use it you're actually standing up.
