I have a little problem. I have a treadmill. A pretty nice one that my husband bought for me a few years ago. Since then I had joined a gym then let that membership go (due to finances). Well, when I was going to the gym, I got addicted to the elliptical machine. It's awsome. I could burn 600-700 calories in an hour on that machine! On the treadmill, well heck, I don't even finish an hour because I get too board. On the elliptical, I sweat like crazy and have a lot of fun doing it. The time seems to fly by!......Well, here I am stuck with my treadmill, and don't get me wrong, I am very greatfull that I have that, but I would really like an elliptical machine more! I haven't even mentioned one word of this to my husband. I know he will flip out if i say i want something new. Money is always tight when I want something, strangly, we always seem to have the money when he wants new golf clubs or a new tool or something! Hmmm, but that's besides the point !LOL Anyway, I would love to hear any tips or advice on how to manage this manuver without upsetting anyone(hubby) too much!

I love the elliptical machines too and if I had know about them when I bought my treadmill, I would have bought the elliptical instead. We sold our treadmill and put the money towards the elliptical. That's one option. If you have a sporting goods consignment type store, they might be willing to trade it for an elliptical. You may have to throw in some cash, but I think it totally worth it.

The trade-in idea is worth a try, also you might read the "for sale" section in the newspaper as many people buy exercise equipment, use it a few times, and then it collects dust for a few years and they decide to sell it for a fraction of what it cost new, also call around to the goodwill stores.
The trade-in idea would be extra good if you were to get a warrenty also !

If you`ve given the treadmill a fair chance by putting some mileage on it so that you can`t be accused of "not even using it so no point buying something differant"..Ask your hubby this question...."Why would you buy new golf clubs?" If he then replies that it is because it improves his game or for the chance to improve his game, then tellhim that an elliptical machine would be to improve your game which happens to be the game of becoming the healthiest you can be. Tell him that you can make this more financially possible by selling or trading in your treadmill and that it would be a great tool for your work outs, which by the way since you gave up the gym membership and now do at home, saves a lot of money that can be used towards some golf games... See where I`m going with it?...G

I just sold my treadmill at a garage sale. It was a manual one, but I still got $20 out of it! You might try putting an ad in the Sports classified to sell your treadmill.
I shopped for an elliptical for a long time before buying. I fell in love with the True elliptical at the gym, but let's face it, I don't have $2-3K to plunk down for a True! Some of the cheaper models just aren't the same (like the $150-200 versions), so make sure you actually try out the machine before purchasing to make sure you will actually like it. I ended up getting one I liked for around $650 and was able to purchase it on a 1 year no finance charge deal. Check around with your family-owned or smaller chain stores as well as big chains. The big chains in our area were selling some pretty junky machines. I found the smaller specialty stores are starting to carry some less expensive options than the highest end products these days, and sometimes have great financing packages.

I had a really nice treadmill and got $300 out of it. I also did the no finance chage deal and paid it out in payments. I have a a Healthrider that was as close to the one I use at the gym as I could get w/o spending $5000. It was around $700.

Thanks to all who responded. I don't think we have any trade-in shops around here. I'll check that out though. And I have been checking the newspaper ads and as of yet, there aren't any for sale in there. I'm going to keep on it!
To those of you who did trade to an elliptical, Do you enjoy your workouts more now? Do you workout more often? Have you made bettter progress?

I do work out more since the elliptical doesn't hurt my knees and I do believe the elliptical burns more calories in the same about of time, at least for me since I'm able to work out harder due to low impact on my knees.
I don't think I will ever totally enjoy working out :), but the elliptical is not as boring to me as the treadmill was.

I also find a treadmill very boring, and have trouble doing any meaningful time on it. Is there a Play it Again store where you are. They will resell sports equipmnent for you . I have good luck selling exercise equipment at garage sales. You can also try ebay. I also love the elliptical. Have been using one for six years. Just got a new Nordic track for $599 including shipping. Love it. I have tried every kind of exercise equipment in my 60 years, and the only thing that comes close to the eilliptical is a Schwinn Airdyne Bike. Over time , however, the Schwinn can hurt your lower back and make you butt sore. Plus, you don't get any of the weight bearing advantages. Some inexpensive but very good ellipticals can be found at fitnessquest.com.
