So this may be a silly question. But when taking into account total calories in a day are you counting total amount consumed or do you minus your calorie burn during a workout? I mean say you consume 1200 calories, but you burned 300 calories in your workout. Do you count that as 900 calories total or 1200? So when saying not to consume below 1200 calories, is it okay to have 1200 calories but workout enough to put you below that?

i have often wondered the same thing, unfortunatly to lose weight im pretty sure that you calculate all calories and don't subtract the ones that you burn

..The so-called 1200 daily calorie limit is based on the fact that the body even without any extra exercising burns way more than 1200 daily calories..( Even on the slightest person )

Now, lets say you are a lady who is 5ft 3 inches, and are 35 years old, and your weight is 150 Lbs.
Well, even if you sat on your butt for 9 hours a day at work, and you come home and basically sit around watching TV, or doing slight household chores, you probably burn off..( Including your sleep time )...around 1800-2000 daily calories. Now remember that this amount is for a women weighing approx 150 Lbs, and doing NO exercising during her daily life.

So, if you were eating Approx 1200 calories a day, and in the daily life i just gave as an example, you would be minus about 700 calories a day just to MAINTAIN that 150 Lbs weight. So, if you multiply 700 X 7 days, thats 4900 calories a week..( thats about 1 1/3 Lbs weight loss a week with NO exercising )...now, if you added say 4 days of walking/jogging..( Intervals )...a week, not only will you up your weekly weight loss to about 3 Lbs a week, you will up your resting metabolism rate, and you will train your heart muscles as well. Now, also remember, if you are also including a routine of say 3 to 4 days a week of some sort of weight training, you should try to up your daily calorie intake from 1200, cause, you will need the extra protein to help with the added energy out-put. Otherwise, your body will feed on whatever muscle % you had before you began your exercise routine.

I personally would reccomend, if you never have worked out before on a constant basis, i would just try to reduce your daily calorie rate. If you multiply your CURRENT body weight by 12..( Say 150 Lbs X 12 = 1800 )..now that would be your daily minimum calorie needs just to maintain that 150 Lbs WITHOUT any exercise )..and since we know that 1 Lb of fat = 3500 calories, if you reduce your calorie intake to 1300 as day, you will lose 1 Lb a week.
Now, if you do want to do a little aerobic workout, try walking for 3 minutes, and then jogging at least twice as fast for 1 minute, and then repeat that cycle for 20 minutes 4 days a week, and you will up your weekly weight loss to at least
2 to 2 1/2 Lbs a week..( A respectful, and safe amount to lose per week )..then, as you get closer to your goal, you could then up your workouts to include weight training and more extreme aerobic workouts to build up muscle weight.

Hope this Info helps :-)

extreme aerobic workouts dont build muscle weight...only weight training does and that is only if you consume enough protein..approximately 1gram per pound roughly...but i do agree 1200 calories is pretty low, a bit too low...you would get better results eating more...as for the original question, you dont subtract what you have 'burnt' from your total calories ingested..if u ate 1500 calories a day and did 30 minutes on a bike which said you have burnt 200 calories, your day doesnt equal 1300 calories...it still equals 1500...however keep in mind exercise raises the metabolism, which helps you burn more calories at rest...and dont think of it as 30 minutes on a bike just worked off a portion of a chocolate bar or some sort of food..it doesn work like that..i think it becomes too confusing when though of like that...just think by more exercise, you are burning fat and raising your metabolism so when you eat, the food used is utilised quickly and the more you exercise, the less and less of that food is stored as fat...and remember to weight train...muscle is your metabolism..to lose it from excess cardio and prolonged calorie restrictions is to shoot yourself in the foot!

thanks for all the info guys. by the way, i do eat more than 1200 calories, but i was just wondering since the rule of thumb seems to be don't eat less that 1200 calories. Anyway, i'm 5'5", 119 and working on those last 4 pounds (but i'm in no rush) and i do work out religiously with both weights and cardio. But yeah, i guess it makes sense that consuming calories counts more since you don't really know how much you burn in a day other than the not very reliable numbers on the cardio equipment.

because of my body frame, and the way my body is actually shaped, I want to lose a few more pounds. I mean i have a triangle based body which i call it and that means my wrists are skinny but my upper arms are bigger, and my ankles are skinny but my hip flexor areas are bigger and i have a small waist but i have broad shoulders and hips. So it's just because of that. I'm actually okay with myself now that's why I said i'm in no rush. :)
