 too old???

After reading some of the stuff on this site; it does make me want to get on the path for weight loss. A lot of people I know, including a doctor, have told me that once you hit your 40's,,,,,forget it!!! Are there any "over 40 success stories"?

I`m sure there is a few but although i`m only 38 years old, I fully intend to be a success story by the age of 40!!! My ? is if it wasn`t possible to get in better age after 40, then why so many senior citizen fitness classes...A fwe years ago at 35 I took aerobic classes at a Y.W.C.A. and because the classes were in the daytime the majority of woman there were retired or 50 + and my god I wish I would have been half as healthy as them...I think you should do this for yourself but also proove your doctor wrong...You can make changes a bit at a time it doesn`t have to be full steam ahead and I do believe that it can be done no matter what age group! BIG : )....G

I'm surprised a doctor would tell you that; mine certainly disagrees. I'm 45, and I've lost 70 pounds, and am going for the final 20 to get down to the ideal weight I maintained through most of my 20's and 30's. I haven't encountered much more difficulty than anyone else, I think, except that it's maybe a little harder to exercise, and that might be just me. My brother was overweight all his life, lost 105 pounds in his early 40's, and is keeping it off. I am informed that your metabolism does slow down a bit as you get older, especially if you're a woman, but that just means you have to eat a little less and/or exercise a little more. If you want it, it can't hurt to give it a try, right?

Thanks for the comments! Your success is making me feel better about the whole thing. Just knowing that at least one person has done it is enough to get me started.

...You are NEVER too old to get into shap/lose weight/start exercising. Yeah, your natural motabolism might start to slow down even when you
hit your late-20's or early 30's, or say when a woman has a child. But, through good eating habits about 85 % of your eating week, along with exercising about 3-4 days a week, ANYONE/ANY AGE can do it, and see results. 40-50 is not an old age either. Yes, if one has not exercised in a long time, and is over-weight at say 60-65 + years of age, it would be very wise to not only see a doctor first, but to take it ridiculously slow at the beginning. But, in your 40"s, hey, Sly Stallone is 55, and Arnold is also around that age. And even though they have been at it for a while, you can ALWAYS regain your past form.

Good luck to you.

My Mom is 52 years old and has been on and off weight watchers her whole life. She'd lose some then gain it back. Her only downfall was that she never exercised. She has had a treadmill for years and never used it until recently. She started in Oct. I believe, she walks about five miles a day. 2 and a half in the morning and 2 and a half in the evening. She has gone from a size 22 to a 16 since then. We are all so proud of her and she has been an insperation to me. She is down 43 pounds and looks better than ever....She's lost weight before, but now with the exercising she actually has gotten smaller and firmer. I see her about once a week and every time I see her she has changed. I was just telling her the other day that her neck looks longer because it is much more defined. She is so energized, she says that when she's walking she dosen't want to stop, she has to force herself to stop so she won't be late for work. She is so happy and full of energy now. She even noticed a man checking her out the other day and was bragging about it. My Dad didn't seem to like that, but mabey he'll realize what he has and start treating her better. lol....hope this story helps and gets you motivated. good luck and best wishes, Donna

Thanks Donna, I am going to start with exercising. I figured going for walks would be a good slow way to start, and then I planned on going to the pool for the water aerobics. Not that I am looking forward to putting that swim suit on!!! That is great for your mom, hoping I will be as successful as her.

"I am informed that your metabolism does slow down a bit as you get older, especially if you're a woman, but that just means you have to eat a little less and/or exercise a little more."

Well I do think that it isn't so much that it slows, but that we slow down and the metabolism floows. look at the majority of old people--they just don't even make an effort. They could but they for the most part are married for over 20-30 eyars and may feel they don't need to keep fit. Maybe they listen to this crud that you are supposed to slow down anyway..and feel helpless and let it happen...

no thanks...

For those not familiar with what C1 abd C2 is--challenge one and challenge two and a challenge takes 12 weeks...so in other words this lady has done just 36 weeks on BFL and looks like she does now. :)

Just goes to show that no matter what weight you are, you can do it!

I beleive it's never too late! Yes your metab slows a bit...yea your caloric needs are a bit lower. But there are ways to compensate! The reason your metab..slows is because you lose muscle (starting around age thirty) that's replaced w/fat. Why not add a little strength training w/your walks? You don't have to start out w/much weight and even if your not building muscle at the beginning you will be boosting your metabolism naturally! I've never in my life lost more than ten pounds! I just turned forty and I've lost thirty pounds and don't plan to stop...I feel like it's taken this long to figure it out. It's about lifestyle man!
LIFE...STYLE!!! You can do it! Go for it!

That doesn't happen though unless you let it really. It is a case of use it or lose it again.

Don't use it and you lose it. Most people in their thrities are having babies and settled that's all, and they let themselves go sadly. I have to laugh...if we all beleived that it was something that happened to the body and did nothing about it, we would end up old before our time. But as it is, it is fact that life is extended many years beyond what it used to be merely because people now atleast try to look after themselves.

If you don't exercise, you GH slows off...GH peaks when you engage in physical activity. So if you don't stay active, the levels drop...age has nothing to do with it.

Tell me more about the challenges - is that somewhere on this site? I didn't see it. I'm 66 years old and about to start a February-April exercise challenge at the continuing care community where we live. I'm 60 pound overweight, but in much better condition than I was when we moved here 2 years ago. I'm exercising quite a lot, but haven't been controlling the calories. Been yo-yoing all my life. In my younger days the weight came off easily (before it returned) - 10 pounds a month. I doubt that I can lose at that pace anymore, even with exercising.

You can go to www.bodyforlife.com and find more information about the challenge. I would personally recommend buying the book as well if you really think you'll get serious with this. I bought it last year and it was a majot motivation. :)
Good luck Maggie!

I hope you weren't suggesting that I said a person should just slow down and let it happen. Did you read all of my post? What I said was...if you want to lose weight and become fit you should do just the opposite through physical fitness (walking..whatever) and to reverse the natural aging process you should encorporate strength training into your routine. I was trying to encourage her...that it's NEVER too late!

Go for it! BTW, I forgot to mention that my 71-year-old mother started a very moderate weight loss program last spring, and has lost almost 30 pounds. It's true that it's never too late.

I don't understand what you mean by "do the opposite"......

Anne-Marie said she beleived that the aging process ie;losing muscle as we grow older wasn't so much something that was natural but self inflicted. The move it or lose it syndrome. And I would have to say that in a way I agree...it's both! Unfortunately the two kinda go hand in hand...my point about doing the "opposite" was that we don't have to accept the "inevitible" we can turn around the aging/muscle loss by doing strength training.

oh, I understand now. Do you think that once a lot of weight is lost, it is still possible to tighten up that old stretch out skin?

I think yes and no...I think time will do wonders & you have to give it time to see what your body will do. Everyone has different levels of elastin in their skin which mostly depends on their genetic heredity. For some who have lost 100 pounds or more surgery to remove excess skin is definately an option to consider. But I would definately wait and see what your body will do on its own first. If it were me I would wait at least a year or more after a huge loss. Just my opinion...
