to GymMachine or someone re; exercise physiology

The last couple of weeks, I have been sleeping restlessly - I wake up about 3 - 4 in the morning, with a nasty deep muscle ache in my left buttock and down the back of my left leg. The first time was the night after I had done some brisk uphill hiking, so I chalked it off to that and just sore muscles. It's continued to happen though, nearly every night and I haven't done different or more strenuous exercises than normal. Could it be something else? Not enough potassium maybe? I have heard that not enough potassium can cause leg cramping at night. This is really weird, though, so deep in the muscle and the only way to make it feel really better is to get up and work it out. I try to tuck my leg in close in the fetal position, to stretch it out, so I can go back to sleep, which sometimes works but more often than not, doesn't. Any clue?

Good healthy muscle growth soreness is usually felt equally on both sides of the body, for example both arms after a good workout where the muscles were stressed in a way that they are not accustomed to . Injuries are usually felt in only one isolated location. Sounds like muscle spasm to me. Lack of potassium or even calcium for that matter usually does not affect just one body part or muscle. I would stop exercising for a few days. Gentle stretching, muscle massage, and hot soaks, with a little advil will probably help. See if it starts to feel better. I'm certainly not a doctor, and I have had to visit some in the past when muscle pulls did not improve on their own. About the only thing they can do if it is not real serious is give you some muscle relaxers and similer advice that I suggested. Hope it gets better soon.

i agree with SS....maybe u have pinched a nerve in your back but to have it sore in 2 places like the opposing buttock and leg i doubt it...i doubt any dietry factors are involved and would rather look to remedies such as that suggested by SS....as for what it is exactly, its anyones guess...spasm, strain from the walk etc

I would suggest seeing a doctor. The location of the pain (left butt down left leg) could make it anything from a pinched nerve to a simple inflammation. Either way, resting is not healing it so you should get to a doctor so he can properly address and fix the problem. The sooner the better.

This sounds like your sciatic nerve. Sometimes a change in excercise can cause inflamation around the nerve and one will feel pain from the buttock to the foot and when walking it can feel like a shooting pain. Relief can be found by taking ibuprofen and doing the following stretch.
Stand with both hands on your hip
Place the none effected leg forward as if you were doing a lunge
push your hands into your hip as you stretch forward.
The effected leg should be behind your hip, stretch like this slowly a couple of times a day and you should feel some relief.
hope this helps.

 go to a doctor.

I was thinking that it might have something to do with the sciatic nerve but I am not an MD.
if this injury does indeed involve a nerve then going to a doctor is absolutely necessary. You don't want to mess around with neuropathy. Get it diagnosed asap so you can be on the road to recovery before it worsens.

Deep muscle pain or nerve? The two will feel totally different.

I think it's muscle - if it was a nerve, especially sciatic, I would think the pain would be constant and it would burn or tingle. This is more like when you have sore muscles or cramps, and it occurs after hours of rest, while sleeping and goes away when I get up and move...I'm not too worried, just thought it odd that it keeps recurring almost every night.
