i was wondering if anyone had any tips to loosing weight in the thigh, hip, butt area?? i have a fairly small waist, but a massive lower body! i have been doign the elyptical machine on the gluteal setting, but i am not sure that it is working. is this an ok thing to be doing or is there a better cardio exercise that will help me loose weight in that area faster? i would love to be able to buy pants that fit my waist AND my legs! :)

Maggy,
Actually, you can't really spot reduce. You probably have a body type called a "spoon," which means you have a smaller upper body and bigger lower body (that doesn't mean you can't look thin, Jennifer Anniston is also a spoon)... but it does mean that when you gain, you will gain more in the lower body.
So, basically, keep your diet, exercise (cardio and light weights, high reps) going, and you will reduce all over fat percentage. Since you hold it in your bottom half, you WILL lose down there!

Hi Ya,
Although you can't spot reduce, walking (briskly and far) is great for the lower body, since it works the muscles of your legs, hips, and lower back. Many people who sucessfully lose weight, and more importantly, keep it off, are very dedicated walkers! In addition, the "queen" and "princess" of lower body exercises (squats and front lunges) really tightened up my legs and butt a treat! I don't gain much weight in my lower body, but gain in my chest, shoulders, and face, but the 19 lbs I have lost have really made a difference in how I look. That 19 lbs that I have lost represents 1 inch lost from my hips (currently 36", and down from 37"), 1 inch lost from my waist (currently 28", and down from 29"), and a WHOPPING 2 + INCHES lost from my chest (currently 36", and down from a tad more than 38".) As you can see, I lost more weight from my problem area (too big in the chest), so you may find as you lose weight that you lose more from your problem area. Hope so! Cheers, Dee

I have been Power Walking and then doing the rowing machine and cycle. When I do weights I do the adducters and abducters..with the help of a gym equipment also.
I have exactly the same problem really. Normally my waist would be very slim (not now though) and the legs would always seem to be thicker than the waist at some point! Each of my upper thigh's are 26" in circumference and that used to be my waist size!
My legs and back have been feeling stronger lately..though no visual improvement yet. It always goes of the breasts ans upper body first unfortunately for me, which tends to exaggerate my already large lower half! :)

cardio, diet, cardio, diet....its fat u want to remove and this is the only way...sure add weights if you want to, and they will indirectly help u lose weight, but cardio and diet is perhaps more of what u should focus on....and if the queen and princess of leg exercises are squats and lunges then the king has to be deadlifts!! :P

I, too, have a much smaller upper body than lower. In addition, I am very short - only 5 ft. tall. I am just now getting back into working out once again, but I absolutely love the results I have gotten in the past due to cardio workouts via the elliptical trainer. I always avoided it because I did not want the results I had gotten from doing step aerobics ( much larger thighs although firm..I didn't want larger). I consulted a personal trainer and worked with her for about 4 months and I couldn't thank her enough for introducing me to the elliptical trainer. Recently, in my search for a new gym, a Precor elliptical trainer was a must.
