hi guys!...i am new to this whole thing...in all honesty, i ran across this website while desperately searching for a way to lose weight...i was very impressed and drawn to this site because of the unconditional support that you give each other...i really think that is what i need at this point...i have tried many diets and nothing has worked...i am 19 and newly engaged...he and i are not planning on getting married until 2005, but when i walk down that aisle i want to wow not only myself, but everyone else...my weight has gotten way out of hand in the past year and i still feel like i am spiralling out of control...i feel incredibly helpless and i dont know how to discipline myself...do you all have any suggestions?...if you do, i would greatly appreciate any feedback!

Welcome!!!! You have chosen a great place to help you get started and to keep you motivated. One thing I would suggest is to keep track of everything you eat. For the first couple of days eat as you normally would. Figure how many calories you consume per day then subtract 500 per day from that. You should lose 1 pound a week. Then if you add exercise on top of that you will lose more. And remember to drink plenty of water. It is very important to keep yourself hydrated and it really helps flush out your body. Don't try to lose weight to fast. For most people it really frustrates them and give up. Trust me I am one of them. That's why I am here trying to lose weight all over again. Good luck. I wish you well and hope to see you around alot.

Hi!...welcome to the group (and congratulations on your engagement.) I have literaly been on over a hundred diets in my life (started my first at 7) and never had long term success until now. I think part of the reason is that I do not consider myself as being on a diet; I have just made numerous small changes in my eating habits that together have allowed me to loose weight. My first change was # of meals. I used to only eat dinner, and by that time I was so hungry that once I started eating, I just wouldn't stop. Now, I eat 6 times a day (approx. every 2-3). This way, I never am very hungry, so even if I do have something that is not very healthy, I don't have very much of it. With the increase in # of meals, my portion sizes decreased significantly. I now eat until I feel satisfied instead of eating until I am full (or too full as the case sometimes was.) I also cut out all soft drinks and try to take out all unneccessary sugar and fat by using sugar substitues, pam instead of oil, cutting out fried foods, only eating lean meats, and by trying not to eat out as much as I used to. Also, make sure to drink lots of water and don't forget to exercise. Good luck!!

Hi Cassie,

I think the first years after high school are commonly a time when weight get's out of control. My girls and their buddies always talk about the "freshman 15", which is usually lots more than 15 lbs, according to them.

I think that makes it an excellent time to get control of your life!

First of all, forget the diet concept. Diets don't work...at least not in the long run. You really have to make a change in your life. You really need to make a decision that you are going to be a healthier person.
Start thinking like a healthier person. Behave like a healthier person. It kinda grows on you.

I wish you knew what I know...I'm 45 and I've nearly destroyed my body. I had two heart attacks by the time I was 39, largely due to eating habits and smoking. I figure I've smoked $40,000 to $50,000 in my life. At the time of my 1st heart attack my cholesterol level was 386, which means I had rocky road ice cream in my veins instead of blood.

So here I am stuck with half a heart and trying to make it better. I think it's lots easier just to live better when you're younger, but I know it's hard when you're nineteen to think about anything but now.

So let me offer you this. When you go into a marriage, you have an obligation to take to that marriage the best YOU that you can be. That means a healthy YOU! And even if you never got married, you have one shot at life, and one body to do that life with. You should try to take the best care of that body that you can. Your healthy body is a truly incredible gift, even if it's overweight.

Okay, I'll climb down from my pulpit now to say that you should document everything that you eat. Be really honest! Start some physical activites, walking's good if you can't think of anything else, and try to stay busy. Go to the Calorie calculator on this site and see where you are, and what you need to do to lose what you want, and once you get started, keep coming back!

Good luck...I'm sure others who know more will offer better advice!

Eric

I intend to live forever.....So far so good!
