Does anyone swim? Does anyone know if swimming laps is an effective form of exercise for weight loss? I do 30-50 minutes of cardio "land" exercise everyday, but would enjoy swimming laps after that workout, but if it will be counterproductive, then I won't. I remember hearing things about your body holding onto the fat stores to stay warm, or something that made swimming sound like a loser in the weight loss realm. Anyone have any info? Thanks.

I love swimming as well, and from my understanding it's an excellent form of exercise for calorie burning. Even just leisure swimming burns roughly 200 calories per half hour, while lap swimming burns between 275 and 350 calories per half hour. I have no idea if it's a coincidence or not, but the week I went swimming 3 times on top of my regular routine is also the week I lost 6 pounds!

I don't swim regularly, but you should give it a shot. Swimming is an incredible cardio-exercise and the water provides great resistance. You will begin to build muscle in your upper body which will increase your metabolism as well. Any form of cross-training is also very good for weight loss because your body can adjust to doing the same form of exercise daily making your body more efficient and actually burning less calories, i.e. the plateau effect. I have experienced this because I am a runer so I make sure that I mix things up so I don't plateau.

I read on this board, I think from JohnM that swimming is right up there with running. So it's really a good thing. When the water warms up, I'm going to do alot of it.

I swim 4 times a week. It's my favorite cardio work, although I also do a few other things as well. Yes, it's been VERY effective for weight loss. And I have to say that the muscle definition in my arms has never been better. The only reason I do other activities is because swimming is non-impact, and at my age (44) I want to make sure I do everything possible for bone health. Dive in! The water's fine ;)
