Is swimming a good exercise to burn calories coz i can swim for about 20 minutes and still not feel out of breath although my body aches! does that mean im losing calories? and after swimming, i know this may sound daft but do u lose extra calories from swetting in a steam room or sauna?

Swimming burns around 150-175 calories in 20 minutes. I used to be on my high school's swim team (almost 10 years ago) and the only time I felt really out of breath was when we did sprints.
Some of my favorites were adding in flip turns & breathing less often (if doing front stroke) this seems to make it more challenging. Another thing you might try is to learn a new stroke. I always did front but then my coach needed someone to do breast stroke. When I first started I was more tired b/c I was using all different muscles. This gives your inner thighs a great workout!
I think of activity this way "I'm not sitting on the couch doing nothing, so I'm burning SOME calories". I'm not sure about the steam room/sauna question. I'll be interested to hear that one. That is the best after a good swim!

hmmmm steam/sauna eh? Well, as far as I know, it can possibly help you burn a few extra calories, but not really a lot. I do know that a dry sauna can dehydrate you, so one needs to be careful. Other than that, I have no idea.
Sorry I coulndn't be of more help.
Cheers,
Luna

From what i read you burn around 300calories per half hour swimming, but Im sure it is related to total distance. Its one of the top cardiovascular exercises you can do, keep doing it. Try to get up to 40min or so tho per day. Swimming is superior to .. stairmaster/bike/elliptical trainer/walking. Running beats it by a little.
