Welcome to the club. There are all kinds of sugar substitues available out there--but that's only half the battle.
You're going to have to choose between the quick, temporary, feel-good "sugar highs" that will ultimately add more weight, or choose to experience some discomfort in the beginning as you "detox" in order to gain control over food which will utlimately reduce your weight.

I'm right there with you. Right before I started trying to get thin and healthy in January...I would make a whole cobbler and eat it all by myself in about 3 days WITH ice ceam. I love desserts.
I just decided that I wanted to be thin and healthy more than I wanted the cobbler.
Like Fab said, there are lots of alternatives available these days. I sometimes have a Blue Bunny ice cream bar or a Healthy Choice ice cream sandwich. They are 90 and 140 calories each. In my Eating For Life cookbook there are some dessert recipes, but I haven't tried them yet.
Another alternative that's probably even better is fresh fruit or strawberries sprinkled with Splenda. Smoothies helped me fight the cravings too.
I know it's hard. But you have to decide which one you want more. It does get easier though.

I could live on sugar alone. Everytime I try to stay on a diet, and tell myself that I need to go "cold turkey" with the sweets I end up failing and overeating the sugary foods. What seems to work for me is telling myself that I CAN have the sweet snack at the end of the day. This at least helps me contorl how much sugar I eat.
I wish I had the strength to cut them out all together but I don't.

I have the hardest time with sweets. Not twinkies and things like that, it's the candy and cookies. I can go all day and eat just sweets. I'm trying to get over it and "detox" my body. It's soooo hard, but I know it will be worth it. I've been munching on granola when I get cravings for cookies and stuff. So basically, I ear a lot of granola. I wish you luck! But you are not alone...

Sweets are my weakness too and it doesnt help that we live near a bakery

Have you tried to go every other day and then eventually every third day etc...then maybe eventually you could get down to just once a week?
Maybe have a yogurt instead or fresh fruit? Sweets were a huge hurdle for me and I think I have finally won. I still have the occassional dessert, but it's not even once a week anymore.

Thanks for the suggestions. In the beginning I did cut the sweets almost out but now I'm having a little trouble with them along with all of the other junk food.
When I feel myself slipping (like I am now) I try to get back on track with just something sweet at night. If I can do this it leads to weight loss and that "all empowering feeling" that we get when we are eating right and losing weight. Too bad we can't bottle that feeling and sell it!!
Thanks. I do use Splenda on fruit to give me that sweet taste I am looking for. That helps.
