Hi,
I wandered here looking for some support and ideas for really sticking with better eating habits. I've made good headway, but I'm not where I want to be, which is a BMI of 24.9 -- just under the 25 that doctors label as "overweight." That wouldn't make me skinny by a long shot, but it would put me in the group that is less likely to have weight-related health problems, and I'm hoping it's a realistic goal for me.
The trouble is, I'm really struggling with snacking, especially wanting to nibble the chocolate that lies all over my office in mid-afternoon and craving mindless munching late in the evenings. I'd love to hear what other people do to combat those urges.
I'm already pretty happy with my exercise program (I'm one of the lucky souls who gets an exercise "high," so I enjoy workouts). And I think I know the basics of eating right. I just sabotage myself, losing a few pounds and then gaining it right back. I'm hopnig that maybe some support/reinforcement/online conversations will help me get over that hump and down to where I want to be.
Any ideas? What has worked for you all?

I like your goal, mine's basically the same, want to be under 25 for my bmi.
My first thought would be to keep an eye on your goal, and ask yourself if you really want the chocolate (or whatever else you have in front of you) more than you want to achieve your goal. Stop and wait 10 minutes before eating the chocolate, and see if that helps.
My second thought would be to remove the chocolate from your office....right to the trash can. LOL. I had to do this a few times. My newest thing is to keep cherry tomatoes around to munch on, who knows what my next snack addiction will be?
I'm sure there will be lots more ideas. Got to get back to work now. :)

Well, here are two options, you can do either, or a combination of the two,
one is to simply allow enough calories in your daily calorie allowance for such snacks,
(but also make sure to eat enough healthy foods to get your proper nutrition)
another option is to switch to low-calorie versions of the snacks you like,
and to low-calore snacks like sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free fruit bars, healthy-choice popcorn, sugar-free strawberry preserves, reduced calorie bread, ect.
There are companies that make low-calorie stuff to snack on, here are some links I found with some such examples, if your local grocery store does not carry stuff like this then email them these links and ask if they could start carrying such products -
http://www.waldenfarms.com/
http://www.pizzafree.com/

First you should find out what your current "daily maintaince calories" are according to your age, height, weight, ect. and once you know that all you do is to stay close to that amount of calories per day to maintain your weight.
Here is an online calculator where you can find out what your daily maintaince calories would be -
http://www.dietitian.com/ibw/ibw.html
Grocery stores now have more and more low-calorie foods to choose from, fat-free mayo, fat-free Smart-Beat cheese, Splenda sweetener, ect., as well as basic foods we know to be low in calories like brocolli, green beans, spinach, brussel sprouts, ect., so shop smart by reading the labels and looking at the "calories per serving" before buying something, I have been able to reduce my calories but still eat enough to feel full because I make sure to buy low-calorie foods.
....and if you can reduce your calories by buying such low-fat and fat-free foods it will help you to have more calories left over for snacking without going over your "daily maintaince calories".
Eat the same amount of calories that you burn per day and you will maintain your weight !

that's some good info there Gary, thanks!
Carrie,
Try eating snacks in between meals. It will make you feel less hunngry during the day
walden farms makes some great 0 calorie/carb dressings for salads/dips. You can make carrot/celery sticks and just munch on those when you get hungry. Or just eat a big salad with the dressing for lunch/dinner.
Dannon makes 0% fat yogurt that is only 90 calories per serving. They taste pretty good too.
Fruits like bananas, apples and oranges are good snacking foods. bananas especially fill me up when i am hungry. they also satisfy my sweet cravings.
drinking lots of water helps me feel full and helps with water retention.
those are just a few things I can think of.

Water... it's good stuff all around.. Keeps the stomach full, and I've heard it's good for flushing out the toxins that are released from your fat as you lose weight (don't know if that's true, but it sounds good).
