 support?

I was just sitting here wondering about some of you. Alot of you, in the past, have mentioned that family/friend support is rather hard to come by. I've seen alot of your numbers continue to come down and was just wondering if any attitudes have changed towards your weightloss journey...or is it as difficult as it has always been?

Well for me, I never really had support..least not till it was noticably coming off. The support I came was from two people, Vicki and Nadine. Wait I take that back, cause the people here gave me alot of support as well.

Ummm... well, I've learned that *obsessing* about my weight isn't going to change it. It used to be my all consuming thought -- constantly.

If I eat properly (with some exceptions... gotta' have my chocolate :P), and I exercise, then the weight HAS GOT to come off -- it doesn't have a choice. It can be hard, but patience is the real key -- as hard as that can be sometimes. Trust me!! I'm results oriented and nothing tees me off more than working my butt off and not seeing results. But thems the breaks I guess.

Just my two cents worth :))

Cheers,

Luna ;))

My husband thinks he is supporting me, but he goes about it all wrong - telling me it's good I've lost some, but it's not enough and I need to lose more, or telling me I shouldn't eat that or that I should cut my calories more to lose weight faster. He just makes me mad, and sometimes that causes me to eat, just to spite him, which in the end really is "spiting" me! My 10-year-old son tells me I'm already skinny and he thinks I look great, so there's some support, but I know I've still got a "weighs" to go...

Initially, I got good support from just my doctor and a friend who had lost a lot of weight. Every 5 pounds was a big deal to them (and me). Other friends and family were mildly complimentary when I would report that I had lost weight, but overall didn't seem very impressed, or were obviously thinking "but you've got a ways more to go." I think that this is because so often people lose a little weight and then slack off, and it's natural to assume that the ultimate results of any person's diet will be unimpressive and short-lived. People have seen that pattern way too often. But as I got within sight of making goal within a few months and the amount I had lost became fairly impressive, all my acquaintances and family started to get really excited for me and interested in my progress. I think it's kind of like a sports team that starts out low-ranked and ends up poised to win the championship by the end of the season; it's more fun to root for a team which beats the odds and may actually win, so the fan base swells.

My experience with my father sums it up. I have not seen him in person since before I started my diet. Not long ago, I e-mailed him my before and after pictures. He called me the next day--a big deal in itself, I usually have to call him--and he was obviously both majorly impressed and surprised. He said, "You told me you were losing weight, but . . . [uncomfortable pause] . . ." "But you didn't really believe me, did you?" I said. "Well . . . . . no, I didn't," he admitted. That phone call alone made the diet worthwhile.

It's ironic, but I think now other people are more invested in my getting off these last 5 pounds than I am. It would have been great to have this much support when I started out, but I wanted it badly enough that I probably would have lost the weight with no support at all (albeit with a lot more misery and set-backs; I cannot overstate the value of the help I did get). Ultimately the only person who can really support you in your weight loss efforts is yourself.

I get the same kind of 'support' from him as well - what's up with that? I think that he thinks it is supportive, but in reality it makes me upset and then I want to eat - just like you've said.

It feels so great to know that the people on this board experience the same things.
