 struggling to begin losing

Hi.
I have just found this board. I am 23 and weigh 260. More than i ever have in my life. I have gained about 20lbs just over the summer due to some very stressful times in my life. I tend to eat when i get sad or upset..which i spent a lot of time doing this summer. I have tried many diets and things in the past and have always ended up in failure. Sometimes not losing any and sometimes a loss but always to gain it right back. I have always wanted to lose weight...mainly because of the way i feel about myself. I don't like the way i look or what people have to say about it. But now i am noticing other things that make me want to lose even more. I've had some back pain and of course low energy levels. But i've also noticed some minor problems with hypoglycemia...which can lead to diabetes. I'm scared if i dont' lose some weight I will end up with it sooner rather than later.

i have read a few of the posts from today and see that some of you talk about Lifestyle changes. I Understand what you are talking about and that is the angle i am wishing to approach it from this time.

There are times i feel like I am so big i should not even be allowed to eat. But i know that if i dont' eat i will only make things worse.

I need to learn patience and stick with this and make gradual changes.
How did some of you make changes? I mean did you just start by adding a few things at a time? How did you approach it?
My goal for this month is to do some form of exercise at least every other day. I am not used to doing that and i hope to establish a routine with that. And then i will begin working more on my diet changes.
Thank you for listening and any advise would be grately appreaciated.

hey...welcome to this board. a lot of the things that you say sound so familiar. I struggled with diets as well, and I would put it all back. I'm just beginning to understand the lifestyle change thing. I think it's about having this tiny voice run in your head alll the time that softly asks you to watch out, asks you to climb stairs when you see them, makes your hand move to fruits and veggies from the cakes and biscuits, and makes you love exercise (even as little as 5 minutes a day). I'm still in this mode, and ive lost 9 pounds in 2.5 months. not much, but at least i feel a whole lot healthier.

I think you're on the right track. I'm so happy that you have'nt decided to 'diet' . It's just a matter of eating differently, not living on air and turning out heavier in the long run.

Welcome again! and i'll help you with whatever little i can,

I started with portion control, i.e., eating mostly the same things except much smaller portions, along with cutting out most snacks, and made decent progress. I eventually began carefully counting calories, which has worked extremely well for me. Easing into an exercise routine right from the beginning is also a good idea (I was lax in that area). However, you probably won't see much weight loss from increasing your exercise alone at this point--it doesn't burn as many calories as a lot of people think--so you may want to start cutting your food intake right away to keep from getting discouraged. Good luck.

Thank you guys so much for taking the time to respond to my post.

I did Visit the Fitday site.... it looks very helpful

I'm excited that i found people who understand.

For the rest of this month i believe i will continue to work on developing a routine for exercise. And also I will take the advice and begin recording what i am already eating normally and decide what i need to work on cutting back the most.
I'm scared to move too fast...Every Quick thing has always resulted in a gain back....so i need patience with myself.

Thanks so much for listening
