ok i gots a q...i dont ask em too often but i gots one!...how much does smoking increase your metabolism by? i have heard 5% on the grapevine but i would be interested to know...i gotta quit i could run tripple time without the fags :|

No really, I know it's hard to quit. My boyfriend quit in August and it was hard for him but he feels soooo much better. As for it's properties as a stimulant... it's not.
Here's the deal... when your body is NOT used to nicotine, it will stimulate the dopamine and serotonin areas of the brain, providing you with a wee rush -- including adrenaline, however, after repeated use (addiction), it actually acts as a calming agent... it won't stimulate you at all. Ever notice that when you get uptight or really stressed out that's when u most want a fag? That's because your body knows that it will calm you down. For someone like me (who doesn't smoke), it will act as a stimulant until I get used to it (addicted), at which point, I"ll be in the same boat as you.
You want a stimulant? Try bee pollen.... seriously, it's awesome :))

You smoke???...Anyway here is some info..
The nicotine rush is short-lived because it weakens your lungs and lower your oxygen level.
8 hrs after you quit your oxygen level returns to normal and in 3 months(after you quit0 your lung function increases up to 30%..

1-Buddy up-
Let us cheer you on and help you by sharing with us.
2-Tell everybody-
It will make you acountable
3-Make a doctor`s apointment-
To chose a quitting date and see abotu nicotine replacement choices etc,..
4-Pick a date to quit-
This way you can pick a time when you know you won`t have so many things going on and also get use to the idea that the time will come when you will kick the habit
5- Choose a tool-
Chose what may work better for you, chewing nicorette, wearing a patch or just chewing regualr gum
6- Deal with stress
Cravings usually last about 15 minutes so when they hit try sitting down and do breathing exercises...
I am smoke free for about 6-7 years now..It can be done...

Oh, I guess we all have our weaknesses, but those cancer sticks are going to be the ruin of you. There is an excellent article in the February issue of Self (Don't know if you get that down ther in Oz) about smoking - even casual smoking. Here's a fast and dirty summary on the stimulant effect:
Each cigarette causes an acute rise in heart rate and blood pressure. Also, the nicotine affects mood, producing a calming effect. Overall, though the negative ramifications far outweigh the stimulant boost you get. Even if you smoke only a few cigarettes every day, in 20 years you will have sucked up more thatn 20,000 cigarettes! Very scary.
Give it up, GymMachine, you'll thank yourself later. I started smoking when I was 15, and quit when I was 25. I would never go back; I find it so disgusting now.
If I can give up caffeine and sugar (enormous headaches for 2 weeks), you can do this. Just remember, it takes smokers an average of 6 tries before they manage to quit for good. So if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

I smoke too. I have tried to quit 2-3 times. It is very hard to do. I agree with Luna about the stimulant thing. When I tried before I did have an increase in energy. I have smoked for 10 years. How long have you smoked?

Your not alone GymMac. I hate to admit it, but I smoke too. I know it's crazy that we workout and eat right, but smoke! I know it shouldn't be an excuse, but I said I would quit smoking after I lose all the weight I want to lose. Simply because I was afraid to try too many changes at once, and also the things that you can do when you stop, like eating. So I said I would lose the weight, and then when I can sway a few pounds, I'd quit smoking.

I cannot remember any increase in metabolism when I quit. I used to smoke 40 per day and more and I was a 7 stone weakling at the time and when I gave up I gained weight. But then I happened to be giving up because I was preggy. :)
I went back to it after that pregnancy for a short while and then gave it up for good. Now 5 years since I smoked a cigarette. I sometimes dream of smoking a cigarette and then I feel disappointed with myself and wake up and although I realise I have not really had one, it makes me wonder why I still dream of doing it now. When I gave up it was only difficult for the first week or so and after that the craving was not there. When you get that far, and try another smoke it tastes like absolute crap and then you realise what your gob must have tasted like to your partner for the best part of whatever...

I only started smoking when I was 30 yo. Up to that point I hated it as my partner smoked and I used to make him go out of the house and smoke outside. When we separated, I started smoking joints at night. Then I would nip to the shop when I could not get a joint and get some silk cut occasionally. It developed to a 40 a day habit like I said and I smoked for just under five years.
I gradually stopped smoking Pal Mal and started smoking something like Winfeild Super Mild which I would get less nicotine per cigarette. Eventually I smoked less through the day, so by the time I was ready to give up I was on about 20 a day and then I just quite cold turkey at that point. the withdrawal symptoms were not as bad as my x-partners because he smoked Marlborough - x40 a day right up to quitting. He said he had vertigo and felt shocking.

Don't know the answer to the metabolism question but I do know that smoking cause spikes in insulin levels which affects the rate fat is absorbed among other things. I smoked until about 8 years ago. It was the hardest thing to quit, besides losing weight. Getting pregnant made me quit. Any chance of that for you??? You could make millions in selling your story to all the magazines and t.v. shows!

Well, I used to smoke about 40 cigarettes per day...let me see....thats a cigarette every 35 minutes or maybe more. I can't imagine having sex 40 times a day---I'd probably be dead quicker than I could smoke myself to death. LMAO!
