still trying to end the slump!
Author: Kathy

Hi Everyone!
I haven't had much time to check up on posts lately but I have enjoyed reading them this morning.... I have been having a rough couple of weeks with my food choices. I will be so, so, so good during the day and then just blow it at night. Not every night but alot of them lately. I have re-dedicated myself (for about the 12th day in a row!) today. So far, so good! I have at least been maintaining but I weigh too much to maintain at this point in the game :) I need to be losing consistently. I have a family reunion next week and I set a goal forever ago to be down to 245 by then. If I focus right now, I might be able to still make it. Even so, I know I am not going to make my 10 pound goal this month :(. I guess I won't focus on that though. I hope you all have a great day. I will let you know if I can make it through this one under 1200 calories tomorrow!

Hang in there. The day will come when you can make it through and you will feel much better. You've lost 41 pounds! Thats no easy task. A few bad weeks probably will come and go a few more times during you weight loss but that doesn't mean you can't continue to lose.

I don't think I ever lost 10 pounds a month. Maybe in the beginning but not since then. Why don't you try and set yourself up for 5 pounds a month. That might be more realistic.

I have the same problem at night. I try to save my "treat" food for then. I think others here do the same thing. Whatever it is you want - have that at night. Save the calories if you can. Once you managed to do this for a couple of days in a row it will become easier.

Have you gone and entered your info into the practical weight loss calorie calculator to find out your calorie ratio? I'll bet you can get away with eating more than 1200 calories a day, as long as you make sensible choices. Even eating at night doesn't have to be a bad thing. My doctor told me if I'm hungry at night, then eat. Just don't make bad choices and make sure I stay within my calorie range.

Most nutritional experts say that eating less than 1200 calories a day isn't good for you because you won't get the nutrients you need. Go here (http://www.practicalweightloss.com/nutrition/calories-calculator-women.html) if you haven't already and find out how many calories you need to MAINTAIN your current weight. Then to LOSE weight, subtract some of those calories (I subtracted 500, I stay on a 1500 calorie diet and I lose about 10 pounds a month) and do your best to stick to that. Not all of these numbers will be perfectly accurate, but it gives you a base idea and hey, it worked for me :)

Hey Kathy,

I too am a night eater. THe only way I have found to battle this is to make my "nights" shorter. I try to put my butt on the couch at a later time than normal, and to keep from doing this, if I don't have a commitment, either social or business, I ride my bike till at least eight o'clock. Then, I try to drink lots of water, then I try to get to bed earlier.

Good luck to you,

Eric

I intend to live forever.....So far so good!

Yes, I too eat at night. I have for years. Just a habit I can't (and don't really want to) break. However, WHAT I eat at night has drastically changed. I used to make myself big bowls of pasta, huge sandwiches, plow a half a bag of potato chips, make myself subs, and even my own casseroles. I kid you not. I PLANNED this. I would make myself a casserole (for example, my fave was crab-stuffed pasta shells covered with newburg sauce) early in the evening specifically for eating it late at night and sometimes I'd polish off the whole thing.

I'm chuckling as I write this because it's so hilarious how I used to sit around and wonder WHY I was so fat, lol.

Anyway, things are different now. I make sure I leave enough calories for my late-night snack and instead of all that junk above, I'll have a small salad with lots of goodies on top (carrots, zucchini, banana peppers, onions, peas, red peppers, a few strips of grilled chicken or sliced up lean turkey or ham, whatever I have hanging around) or a half of a sandwich or one of my wraps (I love to wrap stuff up in wheat tortillas) or anything that's less than HALF the fat and calories that I used to eat at night.

Eating at night isn't a bad thing. Some people live by the rule to not eat anything past 7:00, and that's fine for them. But technically (and I'm not trying to justify anything here) the later at night you eat, the longer THROUGH the rest of the night your metabolism will continue working. If you stop eating at 7:00pm and don't eat again until 7:00am, that's 12 hours your body has gone without food and your metabolism slows way down. If we're supposed to eat every 3-4 hours during the day, then why should we go 12 hours at night without fuel? Again, I'm not making excuses and I'm not telling everyone to start eating at midnight. If you don't eat past a certain hour in the evening, that's great, that's your choice, it's whatever works for you. But I ~am~ saying that as long as you make sensible choices and keep your late-night snacking within your calorie range, it's not going to hurt you to go for a midnight snack :)
