Hmmmmm... I started the slim-fast diet two weeks ago which I've stuck to and followed almost to a T,plus I've started walking an hour a day.. but I have been gaining weight instead of losing.. Anyone have any ideas why I'd be gaining instead of losing?? I've gained a pound a week.. I've been weighed on the same scale,,(at the doctors).

Well, gaining two pounds in two weeks could still be cyclical water weight. I'll say stick it out for at least 4-6 weeks before judging whether the plan you're on is working or not. Also, when the body is subjected to new "stresses" such as increased exercise and/or decreased food intake, it tends to retain water over and above normal. Drinking more water actually helps prevent the body to retain more water.
As for the slimfast plan as a weight loss plan, I personally do not believe in it because it is "artificial eating." Of course, you would lose weight on it because of the reduction in calories. But, can you honestly say you can stay on such a restricted diet for the duration that it will take for you to lose the weight you want (healthy weight loss being 1-2 lbs./week) and be confident in going back to real food and maintain the weight loss? Lastly, their products do have a rather high saturated fat content. I hope you do not have cholesterol problems.

Hi Ya, about 4 or 4 1/2 years ago, which was about a year before i discovered I had very high cholesterol (my total cholesterol was 313 at that time), I tried the Slimfast diet, and gave it my best shot. I too, however, gained weight on that plan at about the rate of 1 lb per week, and started to look very puffy in the face (where I do gain weight next in line after my chest and shoulders.) I am not saying that you have the same problem I had, but in my case, having Slimfast for breakfast and lunch every day didn't quite do it for me, and I was having some pretty hefty morning and afternoon snacks. For me, when breakfast and lunch taste like a milk shake (which the chocolate flavours do), I start looking for the FOOD to go with my milk shake drink!!!! I guess I was piling up the calories at morning and afternoon snack, and that explains why I gained weight. Because of that experience, I decided that it was better to eat my calories rather than drink them, so now I eat a breakfast of real oatmeal made with half non-fat milk and half water, with a serving of blueberries, and a little ground flax seed, and that fills me up! At lunch, I eat a lot of big salads (with low cal dressing), and put in a sliced hard boiled egg, or two ounces of tuna, or salmon, or lean meat for flavour. In the evenings, I eat a lot of lightly cooked vegetables with 3 ounces of meat or fish, or tofu, and a small half cup serving of brown rice or whole grain noodles, or a small baked potato. I have found that I seem to feel better in myself if I eat a lot of "live" food (I mean whole grains, low fat yogurt, and raw salad veggies) rather than a lot of highly processed foods and drinks. I probably haven't been any help, but I just wanted to say that 2 weeks isn't very long, and our bodies do fluctuate hormonally at different times of the month, and yes, we retain more water at certain times, as Michelle said. So give it a bit of time, and hope you do start to lose. Cheers, Dee
