My wife did step aerobics with the little colored steps and hated it. Lasted about two inconplete workouts. It was hard on her joints. The steps are taking up room under our bed now and have for several years.

you could essentially make or even use a makeshift step from just about anything....but in the end step-up exercises are usualy only used as inbetween cardio buffers for circuit training...their effectiveness, as a cardio work out is pretty low quality...unless your a mad-ass full bore kinda cardio hellcat, then they arent going to do a hell of alot...think of step ups as positive movement if you havent got anything to do, but i would limit their use as cardio workouts....running up and down flights of stairs in grandstands and such is a little different...the best cardio workouts are running, as far as cardio goes...not everyone granted, can run...but walking to start, then gradually working up to jogs then before u know it your running...running burns the most cals...the recumbent (spellin) bike is probably next on the list of popular cardio choices...the fact that your sittin on your butt and not using much upper body is why it is inferior to running...and inbetween those two forms of exercises is the elliptical machine...but my advise to u, is to build up a walk and then build up on jogging some parts of that walk, and in no time at all you will be actually running the distance you could at one stage only barely walk...thats how you get fit, and ultimately drop the pounds.

I did a step-test during a fitness evaluation and it was NOT fun. I wouldn't recommend step aerobics if you have 175 pounds to lose....you will be putting far too much strain on your knees, hips and back. I recommend that you stick to healthy eating and moderate exercise to get most of the weight off. For variety, it would be better to add some resistance training to build up your muscles and joints before jumping up and down on a step and risk blowing out your knees.

Jenn, are you near the NY, NJ, Pennsylvnia area or pretty far away from there? I'm sorry I can't remember where you said you are. I have a Reebok step thing that is just sitting in my closet collecting dust. If you are not too far from me and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg I could send it to you UPS or the similar.

I'll check with the post office/UPS place tomorrow to see how much it is. I never thought of using a curb, that's great except for the neighbors thinking you're nuts =) I once actually used a cinderblock (sp) it's the same height as the stepper set on low, flip it around and it's the same as medium.
