 smoking question
Author: GymmyMac

as most of you know i am a smoker...my cardio sessions are crap because of it i believe...anyway i got a question for anyone who knows anything about this...since monday i have been really sick with the flu...i dont get sick often and apart from 1 episode i havent had the flu for over a year...now since monday because my throat and chest is stuffed and i have been coughing blood amongst other crap (i have 'cut' my insides from coughing so much with this flu) i havent had a smoke...not one ciggie since monday, mainly because i cant...so im figuring i may as well quit..now not to be a pansy, but if my diet doesnt change will i still gain a few pounds? i hear that you gain weight when you quit smoking but im wondering if thats from something like a slight metabolism decrease (smokes are a stimulant) or more so from people usually substituting food for the smoke..im not afraid of a slight gain in weight, i mean my cardio sessions will improve and i will make up for it, but i guess im wondering what to expect...im hoping i can quit, i dont feel too badly and its now thursday..when i think about em i crave em but when i dont, i dont even notice..anyway, anyone knowing anything about the post smoking effects give us a shout...much appreciated :)

The weight gain is all from increased caloric intake. As you correctly suggest, people often substitute food for smokes (I know I did) to get oral gratification (insert joke here).

The physical withdrawl only last about three days, so if you can get through that it's all a mental toughness game from there.

I do wish you the best of luck in this endeavor. You've helped me a great deal and I wish I could do the same for you!

Smoking burns 200 calories per day and it speeds up your metabolism, this is why most people gain after quitting. But seeing as you are eating right and exercising I don' t think it will effect you like that. If I can find the web page where I found that info i'll post it here.

Hi GymMachine. I've never smoked, but my husband is a smoker and he's quit and started several times (he's currently smoking again).

You only gain weight if you eat more. Smoking suppresses the appetite and when that suppressant is gone, you may tend to eat more.

Friends of ours, a married couple, quit smoking on January 1st. Neither one has gained weight in all that time, because they knew what to expect.

Hey, give it a shot. You'll never regret quitting. I wish you the best of luck!

I quit smoking 7 years ago and let me tell you the hardest part was just learning new behaviors. It was hard when i was bored or driving or hangin with my friends not to smoke but I was very scared. My asthma was way out of control and even though I didn't wanna quit I HAD TO. I had an ambulance come and take me away during a severe asthma attack and my son was crying and screaming for his mommie as they loaded me up and that was the last day that i had a ciggie. By the way you are hacking it sounds like you are making a great decision.
I did NOT gain weight after i stopped smoking. I was getting healthier so I played with my kids more and stuff. I think that as long as you take the bad behavior and replace it with a healthier behavior, you will be okay. if you regularly smoke at your puter, chew sugar free gum. if you smoke after meals try a few streaches. most of all remember how you are feeling right now and take a mental picture of that "lung taffy" you are hacking up. (eww visual). If you need any support please feel free to hollar out to me...or any of us... thats what we are here for :) by the way, i hope that you feel better speedy quick.

Gymmy: As i stated on this awhile ago, quitting smoking has nothing to do with weight gain. Yes smoking does affect the CNS, but so to does those liquid energy packets that they sell. Like some have said, smoking is an addiction, and once gone MOST people replace it with added food. Working out also affects ones appitite, so is it better to NOT workout, so you can eat less ?, of course not. It's ALL about how you substitute the smoking, that is gone, with something else. If you never worked out before, and you quit smoking, and you replaced it with exercising, do you really think you'd gain weight ?

It is better for you in the long run, however many supreme Bodybuilders have smoked, like Gov Arnold. And cigars are WAY WORSE than cigarettes. Of course i wish you the best of luck, and, way to go. Good decision.

Gym: I quit smoking a few years back. Even though I was already overweight, I did not gain any extra from stopping. I don't think it has anything to do with weight gain unless you use food as a substitute for smoking.

Even IF you gain a couple of pounds, it is well worth the health benefits to stop smoking. Like you said, your increased cardio sessions will knock that off in no time. I wish you the best of luck! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

Gym,

I used to smoke and I am SO GLAD I kicked the habit! It was a bit difficult at first, but what the hell isn't? I gained some weight, but I was eating bad and not exercising.

Smoking is a dangerous habit. I watched day-by-day as my brother died from lung cancer,--I'm absolutely sure if he was given the the choice, he would have happily gained a few pound instead of dying a slow, agonizing death at the age of 50.

Smoking can very well kill you, damn it! It flys in the face of everything you believe about living a healthy lifestyle and everything you are working so hard to achieve. Walk away from them and NEVER look back--you'll breath better, smell better, and enjoy life longer. Screw the extra pounds if they happen to come!

There is only ONE RIGHT CHOICE here!

First of all Gym, congratulations on quitting!! I know it's not an easy thing to do, but your health will be so much better off. Also it's easier to quit when you make up your mind to do it rather than have someone ask you to do it. At least that's the way it was with me. I tried to quit for my boyfriend (now husband) a few times, but when I made up my mind to do it myself, I was successful. I was 28 and had a pack a day habit. I quit cold turkey and haven't smoked since. I was eating healthy foods and exercising a lot at the time. I didn't gain a pound.
Just think you are going to add more years to your life. Your clothes, house, car and breath won't smell anymore. Your teeth will lose the yellow color and you won't get dirty looks from ex-smokers like me. YOU will become the person giving the dirty looks when someone smokes. I don't know why, but ex-smokers are the worst. Good luck friend!!
