Does anyone ever substitute a meal with a slim-fast meal option bar and what do you think of them? Are they good for you?

I started the slim fast plan when I returned from maternity leave at work almost two years ago. I returned to work weighing ~ 180 and managed to get down to ~160 following the plan. I did a shake for breakfast and dinner and have a "sometime sensible" lunch. Then I started eating normal again and my weight went up to 172. So you have to be careful w/the plan and make sure once you lose the weight not to go back to old habits. I haven't had a shake since then but have tried the Boost shakes which has lower amounts of sugar in them than slim fast and taste delicious. I had oral surgery last week and the doctor gave me a sample can of Boost and I immediately went to buy some since I couldn't really eat anything hard. I will warn you that they are almost $2 higher than slim fast and a little smaller in size.
Good luck,
melve

Good for a short-term fix, but one could never sustain on this forever, in my opinion.

I would eat the same calories in real food and pop a multi. They are okay in a pinch. It is a low calorie plan, you will lose but you can do it cheaper. I just never understood a food substitute. Just my opinion.

Hi Pam
I have used the shakes years ago. They tasted good, and I did go down in weight. I worked with a girl that drank the shakes for breakfast and lunch, then a regular meal at dinner with her family. It worked great for her, she lost weight and looked wonderful. I on the other hand, have even gone for accupuncture and figured with all those needle holes in me, something should of fallen out!!! hehehehehe talk to ya soon...carol.

I can give you my experience with slim-fast, which was about a year ago. I started having one for lunch - after a good breakfast and a mid morning snack. After doing so for about a week, I was walking down the stairs about 2pm and I almost passed out. I didn't feel hungry or anything, I just wasn't getting enough in my system. So I guess it all depends on who you are and if it works for your body or not. Also I did mention it to 2 of my doctors at 2 different times (one- an ob-gyn and the other a nurse practitioner). They both had the same opinion.. they are just garbage and not good for you at all. (and that is their opinion..I am just passing it on). They said you can have a half a turkey sandwich for the same calories and it would be much more satisfying. The Slim Fast also started to bother my stomach after awhile. I like the bars though - they are chewy - but a nice chocolate fix if needed. I've heard others say they hate them. I guess a lot depends on you and your life style! Hope this helps a little.

I don't. Eat meals. Your body needs food. Just eat lesser portions. Try Dermaloss - the weight loss patch to supress your appetite so you actually can eat less.

I use them if I don't have time for a meal. I'll grab one from the fridge and go. But, I don't use them everyday. I figure a real meal is better, but the shakes are better than skipping a meal. I also drink half a chocolate one frozen as a dessert sometimes.

They are a great but expensive(for me at least) breakfast. Pretty equal in calories to a normal breakfast, so when you come off them there is no sudden increase in calories from that replaced shake-->meal. I just like the taste =p

Sometimes I will grab one first thing in the morning if I am going to the gym or when I get home later in the evening from an afterwork yoga class (which gets me home around 8:00 p.m.) because I don't eat after 7:00. However, following the morning workout I eat breakfast and if I go to yoga after work, I have lunch at the normal time and a snack (like a small salad) two hours before going to yoga (never do yoga on a full stomach) to make sure that I am not starving myself.
