For any of you Gershwin fans, that will be a tune that will stick in your heads for awhile, as for me, I hope it does stick because I have to balance some good/bad here...
I went to my folks' house to drop off the kids to do some shopping. Mom didn't know I was buying clothes, she just thought I was running errands. Anyway, the bad first. Not only did she not comment on my 20lbs lost, (I haven't mentioned my weight loss because she would say something mean like, "Oh, you've lost 20? Well, that's a start..." or " Oh, you've lost 20? You must have what, 60 more to lose?" A bit of spiteful envy, but I love her, and just avoid it by not menitoning the process. I'd rather her just congratulation me on the results, which she will when I'm done. It's the process she can't handle.) She offered me her appetite suppressent drinks! She was always "hinting" that I should lose some weight. I just about rolled laughing. She was trying to be 'helpful' but I just said, "no thanks" as I headed out to go back home. I was standing there wearing a size 16 skirt that 4 months ago I wore without the button being buttoned, and of course a shirt that covered the waistband, so you couldn't see that I couldn't button it. Today it was so loose it was twisting around on me and it looked like something wasn't right. Granted, it looked awful on me, but that is one reason I wanted to go shopping! The other reason I didn't say anything more or get upset is because I had just gotten back from a wonderful shopping trip. Wonderful, but expensive. Suddenly shopping was fun! :-) Two weeks ago I talked about going into a favorite store and finding 14's a tad loose and 12's too tight to buy. Just for kicks I went back in today and tried on 12's again 'just to see' and ended up walking out with 4 pairs of capri's. I also bought several size large tops, (I've always worn XL) and am loving the trimmer look...Another store had 25% additional off already 80% reduced winter clothes. I bought nearly an entire winter wardrobe (size 12) for about $30. Most pants and skirts were $2.25!!!!! Amazing. The one thing that I hestitated about is that if I get down to my goal, 12 might be too big! Ha Ha. THAT would be funny.
My summer 12's are now a bit snug, but still quite wearable today. In a month they will be fabulous. I am so pleased... One of these days my mom will get the clue... :-)

Katelin,
Actually I am 184 (LOL, official weigh-in results count today!) I am also 5'10", so that helps distribute the weight. At my goal 165, I'll be back into 10's, and the lowest I might go is 150-155, which is an 8 for me. I am not even thinking that low though... at 165 I look pretty good. I was that just 5 years ago, had my babies, and am now losing the baby fat, which is why I know the weight/size ratios. Height makes a difference. How tall are you?

I am 5'10" that extra 5 inches of height must make a big difference! Do carry most of your weight in your middle? Mine is pretty evenly distributed now...no real thick area, just kind of thick all over... 3mo ago I had more around my waist/hips, but since then I have already lost 8in total in just those two areas.

I'm 5'3" & now fit into a size 14 (started to fit this size in the low 70's). Actually some of my 14 jeans are getting a bit big, but other 14 pants still fit nice. Since I am short & having 2 kids, I tend to carry extra weight in my middle. It's genetic...my mom, sister & me all have thick middles! It nice though to start to see my waist getting defined finally & can finally start to tuck my shirts in.
I was wearing a size 18\20 in Jan---and they say every 10lbs is one size smaller...so I guess that holds true for me. If I get to goal (I know I can do it!!--hopefully!) I should be a size 8!! I don't ever remember wearing anything than a size 12...but I sure will try my damnest trying to get there! Everyone on this site is an inspiration! Thank you:)

Good for you!
I like hearing these kinds of stories as it helps me visualize it eventually happening to me :-)
I also understand the reluctancy to tell your mother. My mom is similar, only I think it is more competitiveness for her than envy. She will see me, ask if I've lost weight, or how much I have lost and then go on for ten minutes about how she has lost yet another 5 lbs and that her doctors are all amazed (she lost 70 lbs in less than a year, started when she was diagnosed with diabetes and with the weight loss and improved eating has gianed total control of the diabetes).
Her image of me is that I am much bigger than I actually am too. My sisters are always showing her clothing they buy for me (they live near a mall with a great plus size store) and my mom is always insisting that it will be way too small for me. One Christmas I asked for a white turtle neck to wear under sweaters. Very simple to find, I even gave her the size (ladies XL) and store that had it on sale. She instead gave me a mens' size 4X as she was certain the one I wanted was going to be much too small.
Needless to say, it has come to teh point where I am almost deliberately hiding my efforts and any results from her. I know she loves me and is trying to help by 'challenging' me.
Ah well.... mothers know best eh?
:-)

Hi Nancy,
Usually European clothing runs much smaller than US sizes. When we go buying garments for work, we need to buy a US size10 & will usually pick up a European 12 or 14. I think the same is true for Canada. At your weight, you are probably a 12-14 US.
