I come from a family where we had bread at every meal and potatoes for supper. So, on the topic of 'filler', what do you use now? I don't know what I'd do without heaps of romaine and I munch a lot of celery too.

Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, squash, asparagus, spinach, cabbage, bell peppers. These do double duty, you can eat a lot and are filling, but they are nutritious as well. I have been trying to get at least two different color vegetables in my lunch and dinner meals.

Did you live with us??? Meat and potatoes with tones of bread...
Anyway now that I have my own family and want to give a better knowledge of nutrition I serve lots of salad, green yellow beans in combination with baby carrots...To makesure i have the option of serving a variety of veggies as a side dish, I stock up on frozen veggies...The added cost is balanced by buying less meat(eat normal portions now)...We also buy fresh ones but i feel that having frozen veggies on hand is better then doing wothouth...
When extra protein is needed or salad plays a bigger part of the meal, I dice up a boiled egg, pickled beets and throw in some chickpeas for extra filling and nutrition...G

GIANT salads - all low-cal veggies and fat-free Italian dressing. Raw veggies also - lots of cucumbers.
Another filler is....*gasp*....carbs - and lots of them. I know some of you on this board would say that I shouldn't do that, but, it has worked for me. As I get closer to my goal weight (have about 45 more pounds to lose), this may need to be adjusted though!!

Lettuce is very filling for me, and broccoli.
I keep a food diary and what I have noticed is, the weeks when I ate potatoes (usually 4 times that week), I lost more weight than other weeks. I boil them and pour the starch off before adding them to soups.
I'm planning to make potatoes tonight. :)

I have been trying to stay with healthier carbs. I love baked potato with ff sour cream or sweet potatoes/yams. I love them & now they have the pre-wraped potatoes/yams that are prewashed & they cook in 7-8 minutes in the microwave. They are a little more expensive (usually .99¢ each on sale) but they have come out perfect every time I've cooked them. BTW they don't last much longer than about a week then they get moldy, because they are sealed in plastic.
Or you could cut up fresh potatoes (either kind) and bake them for tasty french fries with tons less calories than the fried kind (I actually prefer them baked over fried).
Just a few ideas along with a big salad and a glass of water before dinner. I also drink milk with my dinner. I find that if I don't I can eat more. But, I love milk. We go through 2 gallons a week, one skim, on 1% (my boyfriend & I - no kids).
Anywho, hope this helps a little.
Mandy

I have a friend who was on Nutrisystem, and their program scheduled 1 cup of milk every evening at dinner.
She lost tons of weight. I try it often and it does fill you up and keeps away hunger for the night.
