 "New dieters"

I see a lot of new people to the board have been asking how to go about starting a weight loss program. Well, I have been dieting and exercising since April 25th 2002. I really didn't know exactly what to do myself at first. The only thing I knew, was that I needed to set a calorie restriction for each day. I decided to go with 1500-1700 a day. I also knew I had to exercise. I basically started reading a lot of fitness magazines, and getting tips and ideas from them. You really just learn along the way. A lot of people go for those fad diets because they seem so easy, and most people usually lose weight on them. Well, I have come to see that the only way you can be sure to lose weight, and do it the healthy way, is to eat right, and exercise. That's the bottom line. There is no trick to it, it's just that simple. You also have to understand that this is not a quick fix either. The weight loss is gradual, which is how you should do it. You really shouldn't lose more than 1-2 pounds a week. Every person is different however. I sometimes lose a pound one week, or maybe nothing, then I'll lose 3 pounds the next week. You will learn what works for your body and what doesn't while you are dieting. That is real important, because you can adjust yourself, to lose weight and exercise according to how your body works. Remember what works for one person, may not work for another. One thing that really is sticking with me since I've been eating healthy and exercising, is that by doing it this way, you learn better eating habits. You come to learn that what you may once have thought impossible, actually is very easy, as far as eating healthy. I for one will never eat some of the things that I used to eat! I know now that some things are rediculously bad for you. For instance, I learned that one slice of meatlovers pizza, from Pizza Hut, has 1,000 calories! I was shocked! Now how many of us actually eat one piece of pizza. I think most people eat 2 or 3 slices from a normal sized pizza. So if one piece of pizza is 1,000 calories, and it takes 3,500 calories to gain a pound......eat three slices, and you have 3,000 calories! Now that doesn't include that soda, beer, or whatever you are drinking, or those chips! Hmmm, makes you wonder about pizza!

Hi Teresa,
What I found for myself is that you have to set up a mental attitude in regards to exercising. When I first started going to my exercies class I seemed to have to force myself to go after work. Now I look forward to it and am disappointed if I have to change my plans (I usually make it up to myself by going to an exercise class at a later day).
I guess the key to this is to say to yourself that you are doing it for your body. You DESERVE to have a healthy body. You have a RIGHT to look good and to like what you see in the mirror.
Good luck with your exercies program.

Teresa,
I too have a treadmill in my garage. It's just recently been cold and rainy here. One day I dreaded going out there to work out. It was cold and raining, and it took my motivation away. I decided to go ahead and do it anyway. Once I got to working out, it wasn't cold anymore, and since I have my radio in there, my mind wasn't on the cold or rain. I keep all the doors closed since it's cold now, so it's actually not all that bad. I had though about buying one of those little heaters, and putting it in there, but unless it gets to the point where I can't tolerate it, I'm not going to worry about it. As for motivation, it will have to come from within yourself. I usually picture what I will look like when I'm finished trying to lose weight, and that is motivation enough for me. Also, I think about how big of an accomplishment it is losing weight, and getting myself in good physical condition. I can look back and say, I worked out in the cold and rain, and when it was extremely hot outside to accomplish my goal.

How do you feel after you use your treadmill? Sometimes the peaceful, less-stressed, happy cloud that exercise produces can be the motivation to exercise. I procrastinate about using my treadmill, but I have never been disappointed by how good I feel from my workout. I would start out slow. There is nothing wrong with starting out with a 10 minute walk. Then after every 7 workouts or whatever, increase your time by 2 or 5 minutes. If you can't motivate yourself I would suggest doing it in the morning. That way you have less time to make excuses, dread it and more time to enjoy the good feeling. Good luck. Small, steady changes can make a huge impact in the long run.
