Depends who you ask. there has not been enough time for a set theory to come around when it comes to a low carb diet. Some things however we can say, weight loss is calories in vs calories out..no matter what type of calories. You know what causes fat loss? When the budy burns more calories than it takes in, it goes to the fat stores for the energy.
2. How many fat calories are in a pound of fat?
3. How many calories in a pound of fat?
In books on nutrition, I'm told that to lose one pound of fat it's necessary either to reduce my food intake by 3500 calories or to exercise so that 3500 calories are burned. How is the value of 3500 determined? If fat contains 9 calories per gram, and there are 454 grams in a pound, then there should be 4086 calories in a pound of fat-- not 3500.
A. The nutrition books are correct-- 3500 calories per pound of fat is not an absolute amount, but it's very close. However, your math is correct, too. Here is the story.
When we burn fat, or other nutrients, heat is produced, which is measured in calories. As you note, each gram of fat generates 9 calories, and 454 grams equals one pound. But a pound of fat is not all fat. It's about 10% water. All of our body tissues--fat, muscle, bone, skin--contain some water. And water has zero calories.
In addition, not all the nutrients we eat are completely absorbed from the digestive tract to meet metabolic needs. In the case of fat, roughly 5% is eliminated in the feces. This 10% water content and 5% non-absorbed fat accounts for the 15% difference between your calculated 4086 calories and the actual 3500 calories in a pound of fat.
Two other minor points: The calories can be reduced when the meal is high in fiber. Fiber speeds the movement of food through the digestive system, there is less time for the nutrients to be absorbed before they are eliminated. So the non-absorbed fat could be a bit higher. Also, the amount of heat generated from fat differs a little for various foods (depending on fatty acid content). For example, there are 9.50 calories in one gram of meat compared with 9.30 calories for vegetables and fruits and 9.25 calories for dairy products.
4. If im 214 now and 30% body fat how long will it take me with moderate/ intense training to reach my goal of 160-170lbs with 10-15% body fat?
How long is realitive to your own body. Everyone's body is different so it's not really possible for us to say 'you will be done in a month' or such. Instead of worrying about time, you should just begin and go. It will reach there when it does. Remember, weight loss and body tone takes TIME. If you are looking to rush it, you will only hurt yourself. Low carb diets tend to backfire in the long run cause your body does need carbs and when you start eating 'normally', you tend to gain straight back.
Excerise, portion control, and determination is what will do it. Just eat right and healthy instead of cutting food groups out.
If you are still skeptical, let me tell you this..Most people in our past ate lots of bread and starches yet it's only now that there is a major weight gain in the US. Why? Cause it's not so much what we are eating but HOW MUCH. The age of supersize and 64oz sodas are the big problem. The time of TV and computers has made exercise and normal everyday movements less and less.

Excellent points Ken !
Super size restaurant choices can super-size people, and
modern conviences might make life easier but we must then
be sure to include daily exercise to make up for the calories
we used to burn doing things manually.
I would clarify one point, we should try to limit our intake of
fats and sugars (especially saturated fats), not only because
high fat and high sugar foods tend to be very high calorie,
but saturated fat and too much sugar is not good for your health
in general.
