Hello,
As I have 78 lbs to lose to my "healthy weight" (according to my BMI) I am looking to do a diet program that is doctor supervised. I live in Niagara Falls New York I know that Dr. Bernstein's diet clinic is an option, as are the various Atkins type diets. Surgery is out of the question.
Here is my question: Doctors dont seem to agree too much on what a diet should be like. The only site I have visited that compares doctor's diets is http://www.bariatricsweightloss.com/ but I am still not certain of what is the best thing to do. Can any of you guide me as to a popular, but effective long term diet solution that is medically supervised? Thanks!

Betty, any diet will work. The problem is that most people can not live on the "diet" for long-term. You need to have a life style change, not go on another diet. You need to pick a plan of eating and exercising that you can live a lifetime with.
I've been maintaining and I've found that eating while maintaininig is not much different from when I was trying to lose the weight. I believe you can lose weight on candy bars and sodas, if that is all you eat. What happens is you get sick of eating just candy bars and sodas, therefore you eat less of them. When this happens, your calorie intake drops below what you are burning and you lose weight. Then, when you can no longer stand to look at another candy bar or soda, you add things to your diet and you gain the weight back.
What I did was not eliminate any foods, just track everything that I eat. Record it in a food diary (I use a spreadsheet and fitday.com). Also, you should track the calories you burn (www.caloriesperhour.com). Then make sure you are in a deficit every day. A 500 per day deficit equals one pound per week loss (one pound is 3500 calories).
Eat balanced meals. Do not eliminate any food groups, just pick healthier foods. Eat more lean proteins (salmon, tuna, chicken and turkey breasts) and good carbs (fruits and whole grains). Reduce fat where you can (substitute fat-free for regular products like cheese and mayo).
As Ronald Reagan said "There are simple solutions, just not easy ones." Everyone knows what it takes, it is the doing it that is hard. Please stay away from those fad diets. Do what you know is healthy and good for your body.

I agree with everything Don said but would like to add that portion control is very important. It is not what you eat but how much you eat (measured in calories) that really matters.
Another thing I found is that while exercise is very important to your health many people vastly overestimate how many calories it burns. I found losing weight to be about 80% diet and 20% exercise.
