 question about cheat days
Author: Julie
Date:   01-10-03 19:37

I know this subject was covered a little further down but I have a different perspective and a slightly different problem. I have heard many weightloss plans that say to have one day off. Is this to actually benefit you or just to sabotage the cravings. Because I know that when I have a cheat day I feel completely guilty about it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it, but it still lays on my conscious. So my question is........what if I dont' have a cheat day in my plan. Will that actually HINDER my weightloss. I am a person that goes All or Nothing on things and was just wondering if anyone knew the answer to this!! Thanks in advance for your help :)

Julie, opinions vary but, i too believed what you do, but a professional nutritionalist told me that, as GREAT as changing your eating habits to a low-calories, and high Carb/Protein diet is, the body can get used to the restriction of calories you are feeding it..( Even if it is a good
daily calorie intake )....still the body will remember the old days, so to speak, and resist the efforts you are putting into it. Now, he told me you will definitely get better results IF you do indeed have a Cheat Day. In fact, when i said to him, do you mean a day of extra calories and whatnot, he replied, not only a High Calorie day, but, Junk Food and Fat. He said that " Tricks " the body into thinking it can get off it's defensive stand, and start burning the stored fat in your body, cause it will think you are totally back to your old ways. But as it is, you are not cause, you will re-start your good eating habits the very next day. Doing that every week he said will keep your bodies from clinging on to stored fat cells.

As far as satisfying your cravings, to be perfectly honest Julie, after about 4 months of TOTALLY Abandoning all fast-food and High daily calories, i really didn't want to do what he suggested. But i did, having say a pizza every Saturday night, and maybe a good-tasting breakfast of Eggs & Pancakes, instead of the usual Fiber one cereal i have, or fresh fruit. Julie, i do believe not only has my results not be hindered, but, i feel better, with more energy with those cheat days. I think i can feel my resting motabolism working even harder, cause my body, after that Pizza feels it can now work off all my previous stored fat cause we tricked it into thinking it will get tons of it every day.

Understand now Julie ? I don't know IF that nutritionalist knows everything, but, he seemed to make sense. And, Resident expert GymMachine also is a big supporter of having at least 1 day out of 7 to eat whatever you want too. Just as long as you don't eat a great amount right before bedtime, and you continue with your Cardio exercises, the extra food & Calories won't matter.

Good Luck young Lady!!

I am also an all or nothing person, and scheduled cheat days would not work for me. Opinions definitely do vary on this; my doctor tells me that if you consume more calories, you will lose less weight, period, and that your metabolism never needs a "jump start." That has turned out to be my experience, even when my daily calorie level is consistently low for long periods--my weight loss is always in accordance with my straight calories, no matter what kind of food I eat, no stalls, no plateaus. However, I do occasionally allow myself to eat more on some days, esp. if I'm going out with friends, etc., and then usually make up for it by eating less on other days. I do this to keep from getting bored and to stay motivated, while still achieving my overall goal levels, but I guess some would say that these occasional variations have the same effect as "cheat days." I would do whatever you're comfortable with, and see how it goes; worked for me.

Man I loved reading your response to cheat days!!! That was extremely encouraging! Friday's are my "cheat" day and I was feeling kinda "guilty" about it today. I like having my cheat day on Friday, because I read it takes aprox. 2 days for your body to gain wt. from too many calories. I normally eat between 1600-1700 calories Monday thru Thursday...yesterday (cheat day), I'd say I had around
2600-2700 calories (I know I burned at least 200 of that in step class). Then I treat Saturday and Sunday like make-up days...not going above 1500-1600. I'll admit I still think I went a little overboard, I think I'll try to aim for around 2000 calories on my cheat day from now on.
Thanks for the great info! I just keep getting more and more pshyched (flunked spelling), about this web site! There's so many people who know their stuff !!! And more importantly are trying to apply it to their daily lives!! That's the most encouraging thing of all! Keep it up "Doing my Best".

This is funny, becuase my mom called me today and took me and the kids out to early dinner. (3:00) I had not had a "cheat" day since last Saturday so I figured "why not".

I don't schedule my cheat days for a specific day each week. Typically my cheat day ends up being either Friday or Saturday just for social reasons, and sometimes Sunday.

The thing is I actuall don't feel like I cheated all that much except for the tortilla chips. DAng those chips!!! We went to a mexican food restraunt. I ordered chicken tomatillo enchiladas (with beans and rice) I was only able to eat 1 enchilada and brought the other home. It was served with a small side of guacamole wich is my BIGGEST temptation (even before chocolate!). There was no cheese inside the enchilada and very little sprinkled on top. To me this is not cheating. This is a well deserved but still reasonable break from Extra lean ham, canned tuna, and all the other low fat stuff I eat 6 days a week.

Yes. I am. I work out at the gym at least 4 days a week and aim for 6 days a week, but with 3 kids ..........

I use the elliptical trainer on interval setting for 30 minutes and do some resistance training to tone and help burn calories.
