 question.....

For those of you losing weight consistantly - what percentage of the food you eat each day would you consider "junk" food?

And what percentage of fattening food - oils, butter, peanut butter etc. do you eat each day?

I know I've asked about calories before but if you want to add that I'd appreciate it.

I seemed to be really stuck between 215 and 220 and I can't seem to get below this. I know; I have to eat less food, different foods, and move more but I'm having a really hard time getting my mind around eating lettuce and green beans etc. for the rest of my life.

Has anyone ever reduced their calorie limit to below 1000 a day, just to kick start their weight loss again? Or maybe drank only liquids for a day - slimfast, protein shakes etc.?

It's really interesting how when we are losing weight we are on a real "high" and when we are not we get pretty low. Or at least I do. I can "feel" your success and optimism when I read your words. And more power to everyone!!!

Just needing to get back on track again. Thanks for listening.

I rarely eat junk food at all. I try and keep my daily fat intake at less than 30% and less than 10% saturated. I don't eat crackers, cookies, cakes (except angel food on occasion) fried foods, fast food, white breads (except maybe the occasional hamburger and even then I try and use reduced-calorie buns) and I limit how much rice and pasta I eat. Fat-free or reduced fat salad dressings, lite mayonnaise, lite this, lite that.

As for oils, I only use olive and canola. And I don't use butter or margarine AT ALL. I only use non-fat butter sprays and spreads (Smart Beat makes a nice one called Smart Squeeze that actually tastes GOOD) and I'll also use Butter Buds. It's a great way to add buttery flavor to your food without adding fat. If I'm eating in a restaurant that doesn't have non-fat butter spreads, I just skip it altogether and go with the butter. If I eat at a friend's house, the same thing. Although I try and avoid going to dinner at someones home because most of my friends and relatives fry EVERYTHING. Even their vegetables are loaded with butter, cream and cheese sauces, and lots and lots of salt. They cook and eat like this every day. I used to go ahead and eat to avoid hurting someones feelings, but I don't do that anymore. If they're insulted, then they're insulted. It's my body and I don't have to eat that stuff if I don't want to.

The best thing to do is sit back and 'evaluate' your current diet. Look at how often you eat high-fat foods or drink sodas. Like, for an example, if you drink soda (diet or not) 3 times a day, cut it back to one. If you've gotta have that occasional piece of pizza or fried chicken, make it an occasional treat (and make SURE you count it as a treat to yourself and ENJOY it) rather than an everyday (or several times a week) meal. I know sometimes that when we decide to eat healthy for life that the outlook can be a little dull. But you don't have to get stuck eating salads and green beans and cans of tuna the rest of your life. What you should do is buy yourself a cookbook on light cooking. My MIL bought me a subscription to Light and Tasty (an affiliate to Taste of Home, do a search and check out their website) and the recipes I've made from those books, desserts included, are all fantastic. Wonderful magazine. And every recipe comes complete with nutritional information so I know exactly how many calories I'm getting, how much fat, how many carbs and how much protein.

*note: I'm not selling anything here, lol

There really is a world of wonderful foods out there, we just have to know how to prepare them. And a cookbook that will teach you how to cook and eat healthy is a good place to start. Recipes that make you feel like you're cheating, but you're not. Recipes that you can enjoy without guilt. Go to a bookstore and find yourself 2 or 3 books on light cooking.

And about the calories, I've never purposely reduced my calorie intake below 1000 a day. I try and stay at about 1500, although some days I'll go over a little, but most days I'm under. So I can't answer your question about that, 1000 calories to me sounds a little extreme. I'm no expert, but I don't think anyone should go below 1200.

From your previous post I think I know what you mean by junk food and my daily diet Monday - Friday does not consist of any. Unless you count the Blue Bunny ice cream bar that is 90 calories I sometimes have after dinner.

During the weekends, I still don't really eat junk food, just more fattening foods that I cook myself.

I cook with small amounts of olive oil and have stopped using butter altogether. I use Butter Buds and butter spray.

I seldome if ever eat:

chips
snack cakes (Little Debbie or other)
cokes (diet or regular)
cookies
very very little packaged foods
no fronzen anything besides vegatables
peanut butter
jelly

Lately I hit around 900-1100 calories, but it's all high fiber and protein so I'm always surprised that my calorie consumtion ended up so low for the day becasue I'm so full. Then on the weekends I'm consuming around 1900-2000 calories a day with food and beer so I am maintaining my weight of 107 right now instead of losing.

A typcial day for me is:

protein shake 100
1/4 cup cottage cheese mixed with 1 container yogurt 120
1/2 can canned chicken 70
5 Ritz crackers 80
9 baby carrots 35
1 orange 75
1 peach 75
1 chicken breast 140
1/2 cup brown rice 150
green beans or peas 100 (cooked in olive oil)
1 Blue Bunny ice cream bar 90

Ths is a total of 1035 and w/o the Blue Bunny 945. Some days I don't have peaches on hand and I may have a tablespoon of mixed nuts.

Hope this helps.

Beer is important, lol.

Although I don't drink beer, I drink mixed drinks, but I have to have those on occasion! Except on the days that I know I'll be drinking that night, I have to watch my calories because I count the alcohol calories as well :)

When I was in my weight loss mode probally the main "junk food" items I had was low-fat popcorn, fat-free pudding, sugar-free popsicles, stuff like that so even though it was "junk food" the calories was still reasonably low.

Percentage of fattening food? I eat olive oil and/or olivina mararine everyday. Peanut butter on celery is my favourite snack when I work nights. Every night for seven in a row. About 250 calories worth.

Calories? Around 1200 but my basal is only 1350 or so (short person) Have I gone below 1000? yes more often than I care to confess. But I'm meticulous about whole foods. Fiber, a real piece of animal flesh, an egg etc. Like Michelle said, they fill you up. I'm NOT hungry.

Cheating? I have icecream or frozen yogurt at least once a week.

Only liquids for a day? No way, I need to munch, crunch on things. I try shakes but they just don't do it for me.

I have very few 'never's .... I never drink my calories, I never add sugar to anything, my deep-fryer is long gone. I TRY not to go two days without walking.

But then I'm not "those of you losing weight consistantly" unless you want to count the long haul. Then I've lost approximately 2 pounds a month for 16 months LOL!

Susan lost 40 lbs in 17 months
At goal, under 124 lbs since Sept. 10/04
