Help. I have recently stopped smoking and I am gaining weight like crazy. I have always been able to control my weight, lose 10 pounds when I need to, but now, its so much harder. I do yoga and strength training, but am still gaining weight. Any advice?

It sounds like you need to take a look at your diet. If you are getting regular exercise and are still gaining weight then you have to look at your intake. A good formula for calculating your caloric intake is:
Men: BMR = 66 + (6.23 x "typical" pounds) + (12.7 x inches) - (6.8 x age)
Women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x "typical" pounds) + (4.7 x inches) - (4.7 x age)
This is the Harris-Benedict formula and is useful in finding your Base Metabolic Rate. You can then subtract 500 calories daily for each pound per week you would like to lose.
The "rule of thumb" estimation is 10-12 calories per Lean Pound for weightloss.
Hope this helps.

OK, I guess I will show my ignorance because I don't think I can figure that formula. But I can cut out some sweets. I have read also that your metabolisim slows down after you stop smoking. I quess eating more and a slower metabo is not a good combo. Wish me luck, thanks for your help.

Hi - I have lost almost 50 lbs in the last 7 months. My method has been to walk and walk and walk some more. I now walk back & forth to work, and walk in the evening if I can. Sometimes I hike on the weekend. I have cut out all sweets like cookies, donuts, cakes, french fries, chip - anything like that. I make a homemade vegetable & chicken soup and eat a lot of that, plus a lot of salad. Everyone is amazed that it looks like I've lost a while body. Good luck to you.

Hi Nancy:
I know it's cold and where I live it's now in the 12-18 degrees below zero area. I live in ski country in Canada, where blizzard and snow are going to last for a few months yet. I bundle up and am addicted to getting out every day. Sometimes I walk to work and home and then go out in the evening.

A few years ago, I stopped smoking as well--and I began to gain weight. I was exercising, but I found that I had to increase my level of activity for a few months. I also paid special attention to what I was eating and drinking. I cut out sodas for example--completely. I now drink water nearly 100% of the time (with the exception of an occasional root beer float). I would suggest that you take a full week and document everything you do. How much are you exercising? What are you eating? I did this the other day and found that I'm still not eating enough vegetables and that my fat intake is too high for me to attain the goals I want to achieve. I also noticed that overall, I eat pretty well--and that I'm not nearly as bad as I imagined. Essentially, writing it down will help you tweak your plan for the results you want. My father died in March last year from Lung Cancer, so whatever you do, stay away from the cigarettes! Hope this helps!

Thanks guys, for all the ideas. It's hard to watch my weight, and not smoke..but I'm committed. I'll be back with questions, I'm sure.
