Ok I must ask......a lot of you seem to drink protein shakes. Please tell me how you make this and what you put in them and also why they help and/or are so necessary. Thanks in advance!

first of you dont make them yourself u buy them already made, all u do is add milk (skim prefferably) or even water but milk tastes better. Most people dont get enough protein in their diet so this helps and also it is a quick convenient 'meal'. The 5-6 meals per day rule is easy to follow when u have a shake midmorning and midafternoon..theres 2 meals straight away. From a weight training aspect, it is protein which rebuilds your muscles from damage caused in the gym (ie lifitng heavy weights). Its well worth the money. Just find one thats lower in carbs and hihg in protein because some say protein mix on the label yet have the same amount of carbs in them Having said that it does depend on ur requirements. A little low on energy? Get the one with carbs with the expense of a few more calories usually.

Protein shakes are a convenient way to get enough protein without the fat, especially whne you're watching your total calories. For instance, breakfast choices for protein are really limited especially when you are in a hurry. Whereas a glass of skim milk has only 8 grams of protein for the 80 calories it packs, a typical protein shake will pack 20 grams of protein for about 110 calories, because of the lesser fat and carb content.

Since Ii require around 40-50 grams of protein a day (0.8 grams/kg bodyweight), it helps me fulfill that requirement without the tagged on calories

And they're not really shakes most of the time since preparing usually just consist of dumping a scoop of powder into a glass of milk or water. Of course, you could blend in a fruit and chipped ice to make it fancy, but in reality that takes more time and dishwashing (I hate washing the blender) than most of us have time for daily.

They come in all sorts of flavors. I personally favor either vanilla or chocolate. I stay away from the fruit-flavored bacause they taste too fake. You buy them in big containers - the bigger, the cheaper, of course. Study the label, and make sure you've got the minimum amount of fat and carbs for the amount of protein you are getting. There's a lot of them out there, but the general guideline for the price should be paying no more than 50 cents or so per serving. Otherwise, you are really getting ripped off.

We use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein. Our 5-pound container is just running out after almost 3 months. I purchase my stuff at GNC for two reasons - they have a 30 day money back guarantee on everything they sell, so if you hate the flavor, you can return your opened stuff for a new one or your money; and with a $27+/year membership, you get a 20% discount on all their products the first seven days of each month. In our case, since we buy a lot of vitamins and protein bars for packed lunch and what not, it's worthwhile for us.

I love this low-carb Whey protein. I forget who makes it. I'll look at the bottle later. It mixes up great and tastes wonderful!

I use 2 whey proteins. First i use Muscle Balance (do u guys even get that brand?!!) and it is a blend. By blend i mean 100% pure whey but it is whey isolate and concentrate. Aslong as its hydrolised its all good. They are for my midmorning and midafternoon meals with some flax oil. The other protein is by ast sports science called VP2. I drink this with water straight after a workout as its the fastest absorbing protein around. 20 minutes to be exact and after a workout it is needed. Also VP2 is whey isolate, its not a blend and therefore a little more effective and because of this its a little more pricey. 1 scoop after a workout is all i use. So u can imagine my supplement rack. 2 barrells of different whey proteins, creatine, a thermogenic, multivitamins, flax oils caps and my shaker and measuring spoons. And yes these keep me broke :(

Because of some recommendations on this board I bought some Whey Protein last night. Someone suggested that it was good to have some to curb/suppress my appetite. I was starving when I finally got home with it yesterday, and took it out for a test run. Apparently mine only makes about a 5oz drink for a single scoop, and thats about 96 cal. This didn't even come close to curbing my appetite. Is this the amount that eveyone uses?

I guess I'm kind of confused because they gave me a free shaker with the protein. But the shaker has room for 25oz. There's no use in using the shaker if its only filled 1/5th is there?

Well I put whey protein in various things: By the way, I have a highly mixable low-carb whey - and I like it not because of the low carbs but because it mixes so well with everything! I think it's by Bio Chem.

Here are ways to use Whey!

- The type I get is good in milk/soymilk/almond milk/etc. or Juice. I haven't tried plain water

- I put a scoop in oatmeal or cold cereal with milk. It mixes fine and gives me some extra protein.

- Smoothies - although these are higher in calories.

- You might do 1/2 water 1/2 juice or milk and mix it up to get a 16 oz drink. Don't worry about what the package says - mix one scoop in with 20 oz of liquid if you want!

Maybe try eating a high fiber fruit or vegetable with it. Apple, carrots, etc. Alsoyou might try some chicken or other protein with it - and maybe a little handful of almonds.
