Hi all I just found this place so I'm the new kid in town. Anyow I was just wondering are potatoes a good late night snack? I have been dieting for about 2 weeks. I am way over weight and discovered I ate more than I thought I did. Anyhow I have brought my calorie intake down from about 3000 to 1800. Problem is I get hungry late at night. For the first week I thought it was due to my cutting out so many calories, so I tried drinking a glass of water, but that doesn't help. So last night I grabbed a raw tater and washed and peeled it and it help sustain me till this morning. Is this something that I can have nightly or should I just find something else?
TIA
Sara

I'm not sure if you want to eat a potato. I also get hungry at night so I pop a bag of popcorn. The 'Orville Redenbacher's' Smart Pop is 94% fat free, you can eat a whole bag with virtually no calories, it takes a while to eat so it tricks your mide into thinking that your stomach is full. At least it works for me. And with weight watchers a whole bag is just over 1 point. good luck. I know I really didn't answer your question but I hope this helps. Or at least gives you an idea for something else to eat. Kim

potatoes arent the best because they are high glycemic, meaning they will give you s surge of blood sugar...you dont want this at night before bed because spuds are basically quick release energy...it aint gonna be used if your going to bed...now having said that if your still under your calorie maintanance for the day, you will still lose weight...there are just wiser choices to make weight loss more effecient...popcorn has alot of fibre so thats acutally a better solution.

I find a big mug of low-calorie hot cocoa does the trick for me. I don't use as much powder as it calls for and I will fill teh mug up about 5/6 full then top it off with a non-dairy, fat-free creamer (I'm lactose intolerant, but the fat free is good for hubby).
This usually fills me up, gives me something to keep my mind/mouth occupied and also gives me a nice warm inside feeling just before bed. On these cold prairie nights, that's a big plus!

I agree a potatoe may not be a great solution. It falls into the "simple" carb category you want to try to limit. Porpcorn is a great idea, as is the hot coco (but watch out fot the caffeine in the chocolate that can disturb your sleep patterns if you aren't used to it). I was told by my nutritionist that anyone attempting to lose weight should eat 100 calories right before bed to keep feeling full and to keep you from feeling "starved" in the morning. she suggested things rich in fiber (like poepcorn, sugar free apple sauce, home-made low fat bran muffin, cup of fiber filled cereal with low or no fat milk, and the like) which also has the added bonus of helping you be regular in the morning,
HTH!

Hi Sara, please don't eat potatoes or popcorn before you go to bed! Not if you really want to lose weight. Both have a high gleacemic index and will quickly turn these carbohydates into sugar - and sugar into fat. Unless you burn it off - unlikely in bed (unless you get lucky!).
Suggest you get to learn about what you should and shouldn't eat - then you can eat as much as you can without worrying. Log on to [URL REMOVED BY MODERATOR. NO ADVERTISING PLEASE!] and find out how to. They'll design something specifically for you that WILL work - and it won't hurt a bit!

well you could eat potato at that time but why would you eat a fist sized portion of carb when you can eat a double sized serving of cauliflower, broccoli or other fibrous vegetable. If you feel a fist sized portion of potato would fill you up then go for it, but anymore than that is exceeding sensible portion sizes really. I'd rather eat a fist sized portion of brown rice which is far more filling than potato at that time and also keeps my blood sugar level for longer.

PLAIN popcorn per 100 gms has 48gms carbohydrate and 48gms fat - and 592 calories! add a little syrup or sugar and then tell me that you should eat these before going to bed. Not if you want to seriously want to lose a little weight! But we can all kid ourselves...

u can get low fat/cal types of popcorn...dumping syrup on it will raise it glycemic index, but even with that u will find it still low.

I never said or asked about eating right before bed. By late at night I meant around 9 or 10ish. I usually don't go to bed until Midnight. Sometimes earlier. You guys got wayyyyy off track here. I would NEVER eat anything just prior to going to bed.
