That's the hardest part of trying to get healthy, breaking the habit of thinking you're not full unless you eat an entire plate of food.
i quoted this from the detox article thread.... i totally agree with this..... when i was in high school and my freshman year i was 295..... i got down to 150 by my senior year.... mostly by running my butt off... but another thing i did was get medium sized plates.... they LOOKED just like the rest of the plates in the house but were about 25% smaller.... and i ate about 25% less... i think it is a mind thing.....

.....don't have time to post much right now,
but just wanted to say that I have found enough different foods that
are low in fat (or fat-free) and low in calories that I can eat enough to
feel full all day and still have a problem with getting up to 1200 calories a day !

well.... a lot of my problem is not having the money to eat healthy... i mean lets face it... cheap food is NOT healthy food.... i only have about 75$ a week to feed 5 people.... so it means a LOT of ramen noodles.... hopefully once we get moved out of the desert i can have my own garden.... i LOVE fresh veggies.... but the fresh food they sell in the stores is pitifully small and horrendously overpriced!
on the plus side watermellon has been on sale!!! so we have had watermellon for dinner the last 5 days.... which is nice... and healthy.... although we are kinda getting tired of it!

Portion control is definitely a mind set. I, like you, think that I need a larger portion than I do to feel full. I am slowly working to overcome that mindset. The idea of using a smaller plate is a great idea.

I cannot imagine how you can feed 5 people on $10/day. I hope the garden works out for you.
The one thing I eat that is both healthy and cheap is oatmeal. I have been getting the big, store brand container of "Old fashioned" oatmeal for $2 recently and adding artificial sweetner myself. The instant oatmeal is a lot more expensive and about 30% - 50%, depending on what flavor you buy, of the calories in it are from sugar. The old fashioned oatmeal has a thicker texture which I prefer. A cup (before cooking) of this oatmeal leaves me feeling a lot fuller than 2 packets of the instant oatmeal and actually contains a little less calories. In my microwave the difference in cooking time is 3 minutes for the instant vs 4.5 for the regular, not enough to make a difference.

Jenn,
Have you considered LEGUMES (aka, beans)? They are rich in fiber (so they're filling), protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins and CHEAP.
Also, I want to challenge you to take just 10 steps toward that swimming pool that is 1/4 mile a way from your house and then increase it by just 1 more step each day, every day...what do you say to that? You got game?

Beans are great,so is oatmeal.I am like you also Jenn, little money,so we just have to be a little wittier.Last night for dinner we had red beans, turnip greens(from can),and sweet potatoes(also from can). It was cheap and filling, and to make the sweet potatoes feel like dessert,I added SF sweetner,a small handful of chopped pecans, and a little milk and heated it up.The kids even liked it.I know that if I can do this you can too,and yeah head a little farther to that pool every day.In no time you'll be there. You just have to tell yourself that you are in control and no more excuses.LOL :-)

it has to do with a LOT of pasta... mostly ramen... i serve a lot of spagetti noodles tossed in olive oil, garlic, and crushed red peppers (a current fav at our house!)
i think one of the reasons i can get away with it is that my kids are still little and dont eat that much....

ill have to look into this.... for some reason oatmeal is the ONLY food i cannot cook.... 2 of my 3 like it... but i can never make it not taste like glue (BLECH!)
as for artificial sweetener.... i cant use nutrasweet or the pink stuff.... cause they give me migraines... i usually make things plain... or with a tiny bit of honey... i RARELY if ever use sugar... and when i use sweetener its just a TINY bit :)

i like the 10 steps to the pool.... i have to wait till it cools down... the way my hubby works if i walk anywhere i take the kids...
i did manage to do about 5 mins of my exercise cd (leslie sansone walk away the pounds) before breathing difficulties forced me to stop.... (my goal is 7 mins tomorrow)
i have been using my little 2 lb weights whenever i sit in a chair and doing little exercises.... like just lifting them over my head... and then repeat till i cant do it anymore... then switch sides... i have been doing about 10 reps on each side about 10 times a day..... and it is getting a LITTLE easier... i know lifting weights isnt all you need to do to loose weight... but untill i can breathe easier (read that as its cooler) im doing all i can! LOL
we do eat a lot of beans too... they give us beens at the food pantry.... so we eat rice and beans with different spices to make it seam differnet...

.....I can understand being on a budget,
what I do is to use coupons at the grocery store,
the store we shop at will double off up to a $1 coupon so that they will give you $2 off for a $1 coupon, and when I combine that with half price sales I can really stretch our food budget, here is a basic example:
....something that is normally priced at $5 is on half price sale at $2.50
and a $1 coupon is doubled off to $2 so a $5 item ends up costing me just 50 cents !
(I can many times get enough thing like that often I am able buy twice as much as I normally would)
(I have had times where before they took off for the sale discounts and for the doubled off coupons the grocery bill could be about $100 and after the discounts and doubled coupons were taken off the amount due would drop to close to $50 )
......I know from experience, clipping coupons can save a lot :-)

That's great! Keep me posted on your daily "walking" progress. You keep working like that, and when the cooler weather comes you'll be trotting all the way to the pool in no time.
I'll walk an extra 10 steps in your name when I do my walk tomorrow.

I'm thinking you mean Labor Day. Don't let that stop you. Just think during your daily walks to the "closed pool" how much better you'll feel about yourself in your swimsuit when you go next year. Of course by next summer you'll be able to effortlessly walk there in the heat of the summer, along with the kids, because of your commitment to getting fit and healthy. Keep your eyes on the prize!
I'm off to add those 10 extra steps for you on my walk now. Hang tough!
PS: Since you home school the kids, make your exercise DVD and other exercise routines the "Physical Education" class and have them do it along with you. Also include some courses in good health and nutition as well as cooking classes (for lunch break).

yeah... we have been having to have the food pyramid talks.... my oldest son is a VERY picky eater.... and refuses to eat healthily (he would rather starve) so he has a chart each day with the pyramid... and if he gets "close enough" then he gets a reward before bed (usually a special sticker or something)
also.... i want to get a juicer... cause he will drink juice and stuff... but storebought juice isnt very healthy.... although we DO get the 100% juice like libbeys juicy juice or welches.... he gets most of his vegie/fruit servings a day through juice.... and a multivit!!!
about the p.e. thing... a lot of the reason i am trying to exercise more is that i want my kids to see that its normal to exercise..... also im tired of sitting on a chair to throw a ball at my kids!!!!!
ok well... im off to go potty, get a drink... and as soon as caillou is over and its my turn with the tv.... i am gonna work out!!!!
wish me luck! im trying for the whole 1 mile.... but ill settle for 7 mins!
