I am looking into designing some new fashions and was just wondering what kinds of clothes you had wished were around in your sizes when you were at your highest weight or wish you had now? I want to make my dresses (particularly formal wear) very flattering and accessible to women who don't look like Twiggy (who wants to look like that anyway?) Your input would be appreciated.

Because I'll tell you, it seems the higher up you go in size, the uglier the clothes get. Plus-sized dresses, although I avoid wearing dresses at all costs, are so ugly! Why does everyone think that heavy women want to wear flowers on everything??? Yuk! Forget the flowers! They must think oh well, they're fat, I doubt they care what they look like! Just throw any old thing together!
I think some nice vertical stripes would be nice. And 'young' styles. Plus-sized clothes are so old-fashioned looking. I'm only in my 30's, I don't want to look like my grandmother. I avoid dressing up and this is one of the reasons, I can't find anything attractive enough.

What is up with the flowers? I am definitely a solid color person, will be even at a lower weight. I am 36 and a bit confused on what to wear. My kids want me to be hip , but am I too old for it? I have a friend who is 47 and a bit heavy, but she wears all of the funky new styles and looks great. I am just afraid that people will say that I am trying to act like a teenager.

#1 - Do not make clothes that will make me look pregnant. This is a big mistake full-size manufacturers make when designing clothes.
#2 - Do not make everything black or blue. I'm overweight, not trying to rob a bank!
#3 - Make clothes that are somewhat sexy too! Just because we're overweight doesn't mean we ALL feel like hiding ourselves! Believe it or not, some men would prefer a heavy woman to a skinny woman!
#4 - MAKE PLUS SIZE MATERNITY CLOTHES!! This is a major problem, at least in my area. What - people don't think an overweight woman can get pregnant? I guess not. When I was pregnant and overweight, I had to search high and low for maternity clothes. When I did find some, the selection was extremely tiny, to say the least. The clothes were dark and depressing.
Just a few of my opinions. The maternity clothes issue is of utmost importance, to me.

I've always been afraid of not acting my age either, but I don't care, as long as I don't go overboard and make it ~TOO~ obvious. I'm 39 and I paint my toenails with the chrome nail polishes and wear toe rings, *lol*.
We must keep some of our youth, don't you agree? No way am I going to start wearing old lady looking clothes. I don't have to and I won't. And neither do you. You're only in your 30's, hon, you're still a baby. When you're old and gray and sitting in your rocker on a front porch with your teeth falling out, then we'll talk about old!
*lol*

And I agree with the maternity clothes and the dark and dreary colors. Black or dark blue dresses and shirts with cute little white collars - BLECH!
Do pastels or white clothes, something nice and cool and airy and flirty.

Yes, I agree! You are right. The next outift I buy will be so hip that my kids may even want to go out in public with me! LOL Here's to reclaiming my youth! I did have a tooth pulled last week, but it was a back one, so I am still safe!

Soft chiffons and failles is what I have been thinking. And a friend of mine says, NO EMPIRE WAISTS! What do you think? I totally agree myself. As for the blues and blacks, they probably do that because dark colors are very slimming, (I happen to live for grays, browns, blacks, etc. but that's not for everyone). So, waisted or not waisted? What do you guys feel good in? Descriptions please. :)

For me, I prefer loose waists. I always have, even when I was thin, I don't like constrictive clothing. So no waists for me! Maybe a soft wrap-around belt that goes with the dress, one we can tie around ourselves and make it as loose or as tight as we want it :)

Anne
That is a fab idea
Design clothes which emphaisis the best bits about the fuller figure. The fuller figure ladys has a fantastic clevage. I don't mean let it all hang out in a tarty sort of a way Just low enough to be flattering well tailored suits single breasted jacket to emphaisis the waist (or how shall i put with out upsetting and i am sorry if i do ) create a waist
I also believe that a lot of ladies have fantastic legs. again i don't mean ear utra short mini mini shirts (although there is nothing wrong with them if that what you want to wear) but either shirts just below or just above the knee look great.
I think to look and feel fab it is important to make friends with your body and be best friends with your best bits and show them off to there best possible potentional .

Alrighty! All of this is going into my file! Thanks, ladies! If you ever have any more ideas, feel free to email me and I'll try to keep you updated on my progress. It may take awhile, but I'm going to pursue this. I really think there's a market out there (myself included!)

Anything with out tweety bird or pooh bear or scooby or stupid sayings like talk to the hand or crap like that. I hated not being able to find shirts to match outfits. i hate the fact that designers think that if you are "big" in the waist that you are also tall. Hope that helps.

"designers think that if you are "big" in the waist that you are also tall"
Christy, that is a huge one for my mom (no pun intended). She is bout 5' 3" and usually wears a 16 or 18 but so many times the pants are like a foot to long and the dresses go to her ankles, even petites!!
That and she is larger on the bottom than in the chest area so many times her shirts don't fit because she is smaller on top. I think so many times designers design clothes for one shape, they don't take into consideration all the different shapes of women.

Personaly, i think that anything colored is good, like jewel colors, bold colors even some pastels look great on larger women. I agree with Mandy here designers need to make things for different shaped people. everywhere i go everything is short and made for people with out boobs.... or thier clevage is around thier neck. Alos in pants and tops Around here everything is designed that if you have hips then your waist is either really tiny or really big theres no mid ground, or people without hips cant find things with bigger waists that are smaller in the bum area.
I have friends that are biger than i and i think they look the best in reds, browns, and cream colors. Those colors on them draw you to their better features i think.... and they do have killer legs. Funky styles would be great as would great fitting classic things. I would love to have a "little black dress" that goes with everything or one of a different color even. Sorry im rambling. But my major grip is that either things are out of porpotion in the sizes or covering you totally.
