I have read earlier in the posts that some of the weight loss tips people give out arent suitable for teenagers that come to this discussion looking to lose weight. I understand that, and I'm not looking for tips or anything just your opinion really. I'm 14 yrs old, around 5'7 and maybe around 160lbs. I'm not exactly sure of my weight, I'm terrified to find out what the scale will say. But anways I'm just posting this because I really want to know if anyone has ever asked themselves the same thing, or have felt the way I feel. And how they overcame it, if they did.
For so long I've wanted so bad to lose weight, to feel comfortable and confident with myself. I've wanted to go into a store and not feel embarrassed of what sizes I have to get. I find myself constantly thinking of some easy way I could lose weight, even though I know it wont be as easy as I want it to be and it will take time. If I want it so bad, why dont I just do what I know what I have to do to get what I want? Why do I always have to give into the cravings for fatty foods when I get them instead of ignoring them, or occupying myself until the cravings pass, when I know that I will feel guilty when I do give into the cravings. I think it might be the fear that whatever I do, I will still keep gaining weight, I will always be ashamed that I'm not the 3 sizes smaller that I wish I would be. Maybe I will never feel the way I want to feel about myself. I really believe that if I did lose weight, everything would be better. I would be constantly feeling discusting that I was a size 13, but then again who knows. Maybe I would be thinking the same thing if i was a size 7, which is what I wish I was.
Sorry if I have wasted your time, but I would really appreciate it if you commented on it. It might make me feel better.

I feel like that a lot. Well, at least I did when I was 14. I am only 5'4-5'5 (somewhere around there) and I weigh 160 pounds. I felt really depressed whenever I got on the scale and saw how much I weighed. We don't have a scale that works in my house because my mom and I never like the results anyway so it's easier to say "the scale's broken". :-)
Anyway to get to the point my suggestion to you is to look past the weight. You have other good qualities to I'm sure. For me I would have to say I like my smile the best. Everyone says that I have a great smile because it brightens my eyes too. So find something that you like about yourself and flaunt it. It will give you more self-confidence and that will help a lot. One thing that I've heard a million times is that if you stand up straight you look thinner. Confidence helps you to be more poised. When you feel better about yourself your mind won't always be focused on your weight and how to get rid of it (that adds stress).
I hope this helps some.

 Yes, posture helps

Hi Meg, Danielle is right when she says that standing up straight helps. Most people will look 5 to 10 lbs thinner if they stand up tall: when someone sucks in their abdomen, tucks in their butt, and puts their shoulders back, their back flattens, their body forms a nice straight long line through shoulders, hips, and knees, and their head will naturally balance above, and the whole look is both graceful and slimmer! You can walk that way too, and look proud of who you are. So try to focus on who, and what you are, rather than focusing on who, or what you are not. As for craving things, and binging on them, we have most of us done that, and regretted it later. I hesitate to say much, since I am a lot older than you, and my metabolism will be totally different, but I find that start craving things (and binging on them) when i am really, honesltly HUNGRY! My solution to that, is that i don't let myself get that hungry, and I eat about every 3 hours until 8 or 9 PM. Every day, I eat 3 healthy meals, and 2, or more usually 3 healthy snacks. I snack on things like low-fat yogurt, fruit, salad veggies, rice cakes, a small slice of toast with nice jam on it, or even a small bowl of cereal...such snacks keep me from being hungry enough to dip into cookies or chips, and also keep me from being too hungry at lunch time or dinner, so i don't overeat at those meals. I don't know if anything I have said has been helpful, but be aware that I wish you the best of luck, Dee

Hey Meg I am 14 years old too. I have been coming to this website for a couple of weeks and I learned that some of the stuff like having really low calorie and fat diets arent safe for us. I have just been watching what I eat I give myself a snack of a popsicle a day in the afyernoon (they are really low calories like 60) then I excersize twice a day. I do weight training every other day and I do crunches, toe tutches(sp) and tae-bo and Richard Simmons tapes. So far its worked great for me. I lost 5 lbs in a week and a 1/2!

hi meg. my name's stephanie and i'm 15. i don't really know what to say except the things that you have probably already heard. exercise daily, aerobic exercise 5-7 times a week and weight traingin 2-3 times a week and you should stretch your muscles 7 times a week. eat healthy, don't drink carbonated beverages... resist those cravings... don't eat anything an hour before you go to bed and have confidence. tell yourself that you can do it and you'll be able to!

Hi Meg, may I start by saying that for a 14 yrs old you seem to show a major insight about "what is bugging you about yourself", I wish I had had half of your maturity level at that age....Well now I that I have pick up wisdom due to my ripe old age of 37 one thing I may suggest to help your self esteem is to find a physical activity that you truly enjoy, as you get more fit you start losing inches and pay more attention to what you eat...I`ve always been on the bigger side of things exept for one period of time before I got married and even then while beeing really skinny I still felt very self conscious.....Years later as I still struggled to lose weight, I would feel good about losing the weight but my self esteem was still low, Now I have quite a bit more weight to lose but for the first time my self esteem is being increased, I`m getting there with the help of fellow posters and although I`ve always like doing certain physical activities a month ago I started karate classes and fell in love with it, the benifits from doing something you truly love will boost your self esteem majorly, it might be hiking, swimming, biking, work out classes , there is something out there for you....Good luck....14 can be a time of questionning who we are so take time to enjoy life and leave the stress behind....leanbutt

Hi!

I have tried many diets in my life and nothing seemed to work. I am now going to a support group called Overeater's Anonymous and it is helping me to deal with my life as well as my weight.

Hey there....I read your message and wanted to reply to you. Trouble is...I don't really know exactly what to say. I was much bigger than you at your age, and I know exactly what you're going through. It's so hard to be your age even if you are the thinnest, most gorgeous girl in school. I wish I had done something about my weight at your age....I'm 29 now and weigh 400 pounds. Yes I'm here for advice and support now, but sometimes I think about how much easier my life would have been if I had made the changes I needed to when I was 14. The main thing I want to tell you though is this, I've spent 99% of my life obessing about my weight. I let it hold me back from doing things I've wanted to do, meeting people I was interested in, and letting my size completely define who I am as a person. I felt inferior to other people, unloveable, and like the biggest looser on the face of the planet. But now, I know the truth...you cannot let one aspect of your life define everything else. Sure there are going to be boys who make rude comments, there are going to be girls who turn their noses up at you, but there are also people who see you for what you are, a beautiful person. It's the most trite comment in the world, but beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Do what it takes to be happy with yourself, and tell everyone else to stick it up their a*s.
