Help! I have been losing weight since November 2000. I have been losing slow and steady since then. I went from probably 220 to 162 right now. The problem is I think I have reached a plateau. In the past nine months I have only lost 12 pounds! I need some advice, I think part of my problem is that I am tired of eating like I'm on a diet, and have been eating like a normal person. This is fine for maitence, but not so good if I want to continue to lose.
Is there anyone else out there who is about half way done and is in a lull??
My goal is 143.

If you were counting calories before, did you reajust your calorie intake for the day? Check out the calorie counter on the main page of this web....Girl you`ve done a great job so far and the closer you get to your goal the harder it feels to lose the weight....Is 143lb a set # or do you have a size in mind, you may be surprise to find out that if your toned and lean your body might not want to go down anymore...There is a book out there called"how to lose the last 5 lbs" check it out it`s a great book, and measure yourself you may actually be closer to your goal then you think? Numbers on a scale are just that, there a good to compare from start to end but a tape measure is a better friend....If you`ve been exercising , you are fit, trim, you might have to reavaluate those #s...Good luck....

Wow! Great job!!! Having continuing weight loss for over a year is some feat.
About the slowing results: the fact that you're still - slowly but surely - losing weight despite increasing your food intake, shows that you have not technically plateau'd (good news, since its so hard to break out of those!). Plateau-ing is when you have the same diet and exercise, which have been effective in the past, suddenly totally stops to work.
As you most probably heard tons of times, losing weight is all about creating a negative calorie balance - MORE OUT THAN IN. And with you increasing your food intake without modifying your exercise, you are still creating a calorie deficit (as evidenced by your continuing weight loss), only at a much slower rate, and therefore a much slower weight loss .
I had the same problem - I was at my heaviest in February 2000 (170 lbs. - size 18), and since I was only willing to modify my lifestyle just a little bit (a 30 minute leisurely walk 2-3 a week, cutting out dessert, and drinking more water), and as a results, 20 months later, I was only lighter by 5 lbs.! I was happy I did not gain anymore, although this was not exactly the result what I was looking for.
Therefore, beginning October 2001, I have gradually increased my exercise to the vigorous routine I have now (45 min-1 hr. cardio 4x/week, weights 3x/week). But with my diet unchanged I only lost 10 lbs. in 6 months.
So reality finally set in: I really have to watch what I eat if I want to lose weight at the rate I want it. Since about 2 months ago, with continued exercise and a 1400 cal/day low fat diet, I have been losing about a pound a week. (Still slow for my impatient nature, but as assured by the good people on this board, I am doing quite well).
In short, I have learned that we have to give more to get more in this weight loss game. How badly do you want your normal diet vs. a faster weight loss? I think either choice can't be wrong - you'll just have to figure out a balance you can live with.
