 pedometers

I picked up one of those Special K pedometers today (had to get the poisonous kind of Special K but the pedometer was what I wanted anyway).

What I am wondering is what the goals mean. I keep hearing that a goal of 10,000 steps a day is recommended but what does that mean? How many miles is that, or calories or whatever?

Anyone know?

Cheers,

Niki

P.S. I'm allergic to strawberries, thus the 'poison' in the Special K :-)

I was on another board and some people complained that it didn`t work properly, one poster said they bought 2 boxes of the cereal so that both her and her husband could have one and the steps count was not acurate.
Anyway I think that 10 000 steps could be about 5 Km or abround 3 miles...I know that with my pedometer(cheap model from wal-mart) I did 7000 steps on sunday which = 4.25KM...My pedometer gives me the distance set in KM(I could programm miles), amount of steps and calories burned(don`t rely much on that one)...Hope this helps, I know that I love my pedometer and I`ve had it for 1 year now...G

You can also get a cheap pedometer at Walmart in the sporting goods section. I bought one once because I am a registered nurse who works all day long on her feet running from room to room for 13 hours waiting on sick peoples every need. It's an exausting job to say the least. Well in the pedometer that I had, and I think that most are like this, I had to measure my average stride length and then program it into the thing. Then, every time it measured a little jerk of your step or movement it would click and count a stride and multiply it by the inches of your stride and put it into miles. Maybe the one in the cereal box only measures steps. Well, to make a long story short, mine broke after a day or two, and it was kind of silly as I had it on my waist band under my scrubs and it clicked all day long with each step. I guess what ever motivates you is good. I never found out how many miles I walked around the hospital per day. The only thing that I know is when I work on my feet all day long for a living I can eat a lot more calories without gaining weight........but still not enough to be as thin as I want without really watching what I eat.

Darn. I can eat almost anything that I want and my weight has never been more than 25 lbs. above ideal in my entire life. The most I weighed is 140 at 5 foot 4. I now weigh about 130 and want to weigh 115 by spring. What I was wondering is how some people get really fat....like 100 lbs. overweigh? Are certain people unable to be more than moderately overweight by nature, and some people's bodies predetermined to grow infinately large? I mean when I was 140 lbs. I ate like a pig and never got any bigger. Maybe me eating like a pig is not as much as what other people eating like a pig is? Too bad to be 115 lbs. I have to eat like a mouse. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Lesley

well the 'really fat' as you call it (ducks a flying object!), usually have other issues in life and food is basically just a comfort...others take comfort in sport or seeing a shrink or whatever...food is just one scapegoat in life...then their emotional eaters and binge eaters...then theres the i dont give a rats butt what i look like as long as it tastes good eaters...its the latter type i actually dont have much time for if they complain about their size, but these sorts of people are rare for most have underlying reasons...alot of people are scared when they get slightly overweight but know little on what to do about it so in the end they do nothing...and get larger....then theres genetics (which u can fight to a degree so i dont believe this is responsible entirely atleast)...then theres the medically 'stuffed'...thyroid problems etc......now u say to get to 140 pounds u had to eat like a pig, but u have to realise your only 5'4 so that is really the equivelent of a 5'10 person being 180 off pounds...and some people look good at these sizes too, it depends on their shape...anyway theres my 2 cents

I guess I am "really fat" because I am (was when starting) 100 pounds overweight. I do not eat like a pig but I did make alot of poor food choices and didn't get much exercise. In addition, I have thyroid disease and take medication for this, which is hard to regulate. (Not an excuse, my weight is my fault).

I think most "really fat" people don't "eat like a pig" but simply take in more calories than they need (or realize) and lack exercise in their lives. I guess you are just lucky.

Having formerly been more than 100 lbs overweight, I don't even know the answer to this for sure. I was an obese child. As early as I can remember my mom would complain about how hard it was to put me in clothes. I was very active, but still I was fat and as I grew older, I got bigger.

Part of it might be a metabolism thing and there may also be a positive spiral mechanism at work where a heavier person finds it harder to do certain exercises than a thinner person, so they don't get as good a calorie burn as the thinner person but they eat the same food. Add to that the emotional eating and other issues and the heavy just seem to get heavier.

I think you also touched on your own answer to in that words like 'fat' and 'eat like a pig' are relative to who you are, how you were raised and what your personal community is like. A group of supermodels might call a 5 lb gain getting 'fat' and eating an entire garden salad 'eating like a pig'.

Everything is relative :-)

You mean you only have 15 pounds to lose. You are too skinny to be on this board. Us "really fat" people don't want you here.

BTW, I thought your post to Petitelady was very rude.

Hey Niki
i hadn't seen many posts from you
i don't come around quite as often as i used to
but i've missed seeing your posts

Anyway i had bought one at Target only Last week
Mine you have to enter the stride distance AND your weight
it calculates calories, distance, time, and steps

I hadn't heard how many steps is good to shoot for
i know i worked the past 2 nights and without exercise or doing anythign but just wearing it to work i got 9275 one night and 10820 the other
those were really slow nights too cuz i only had 4 babies.... 2 were in special care so stayed in the nursery with me so i didn't have to walk out to the mom's room but once. and no deliveries that night eitherso i wasn't running to the back any for that.

I was told by someone....and i don't know where they got htis info or if it's right but that if you get to 20,000 you did Awesome and have no need to exercise that day because you got enough walking in without it.

lol if it takes me a whole day of being at the hospital to get to 9-10,000 then i have to believe that LOL
i gotta work again tonigiht but maybe when i get a chance i'll do some surfing and see what's out there...

Hey don't you know that teasing someone that they are too thin to be on this board is a joking kind of flattery. I am sure a lot of people on here think that they would love to have such a little weight problem of 119. Most people have a goal weight higher than her current weight of 114. She is already at their dream weight. I think or hope that everyone else knows this. I don't know why you don't. I was teasing her....I am sure everyone else would love to be in the position to be the smallest one on here and be poked fun at. Lesley
