hey guys!! well i did ok on my first day of dieting, not great....but ok.
breakfast: a yoghurt and a piece of wholemeal brown toast (170 cals).
lunch: a can of tuna and two tomatoes (290 cals).
dinner: a calorie controlled meal: chicken breast in tomato/basil sauce with mashed potatoes (380 cals).
so that took me up to 840 cals. but then i was a bit naughty! i went out with friends for drinks..had two glasses of white wine (200 cals).
then the real killer came...i had a chinese meal!! which was probably about 500 cals.
so my total for yesterday was 1540 calories.
hmmm....not bad, it's probably about half of what i have been eating for the last two weeks, but i really want to stick to 1200 a day!!
but the one thing i have learnt from dieting is that you can't be perfect all the time. if you overeat one day, then get back on the wagon and start again!!!!!!
i weighed myself this morning and was JUST under 133 lbs, i think i can definitely make this target by monday (132 lbs).
so what do you guys think of my general meal plan? do you think i've got enough of everything in there?
thanks guys!

Well, you're getting protein and good carbs. A little calcium. And you were doing good on fat until you ate the chinese food. That stuff has more fat, calories and sodium than we assume.
What EXACTLY did you eat at your chinese meal? And did you eat it all?

hey Lee....so do you think my diet is basically ok then, apart from the chinese meal, obviously?
i ate egg fried rice and some pork in soy sauce...and i ate about 3/4 of it! it wasn't that big a serving though.

Ok, just as long as you stear clear of the egg rolls and other deep-fried appetizers. And be careful with that chinese stuff, it's LOADED with sodium. If you eat a chinese meal and you're up a pound or two on the scale the next day, don't panic, it's probably just water weight from the high sodium content. Just drink LOTS of water the next day.
I think it sounds, so far, like you're doing good :)
However, I'm no nutrition expert, so maybe others will chime in for some info and advice.

i have a question for ya....
how much is maintenance cals for your current weight....
this question then leads to my next..... where did you come up with 1200 cals???
a lot of people think that they HAVE to eat 1200 cals to loose weight.... but its not true.... and if you automatically start out at 1200 cals then you may be setting yourself up for failure!!!
think of it... you currently eat 3000 cals a day (just a guess) and you suddenly start eating 1200 cals thats less than 1/2 what you are used too!!!
what i did... so that i didnt think of it as being "bad" or off my goals or anything.... i tallied my cals without changing anything... then i found out maint for my (then) current weight.... then i subtracted 200 cals every couple days untill i was 500 below my current maint. cals...
now i am down to 2000 cals a day (i am diabetic and it is not reccomended for me to go under that untill i loose more weight) and i NEVER once felt like i was starving!!!!
just something to think about...
hugs
jenn

Another way to look at it is to go to the weight calculator at this site; enter your goal weight and see how many calories it would take to maintain that weight.
Then the "mindset" would be that what you are eating/exercising today is what you will be doing for the rest of your life.
Just another way to look at it.
I am 5'4" tall, almost 50 years old and I always check the "sendentary" choice for activity. To weigh 155 I would need to eat 1716 calories a day to maintain that weight. I think that is a little high for me but it is a number that I can shoot for anyway.

hey jenn... i agree, 1200 may be low for some people, but i did exactly what you did...my maintenance level amount of calories is 1700, so i subtracted 500 from that and got 1200!!!!!
also, i'm not really going from 3000 cals to 1200; i was only eating 3000 for two weeks when i was going through a bad patch and just needed food! so it's not as big a jump as it sounds. before those two weeks i was eating roughly 1200 a day for about two months!
thanks for the concern though!

hi joan....yeah, i think i used the same website as you, i'm 5'4 as well, and my activity is mostly sedentary. the figure i got was around 1700! so subtract 500 off that and you got 1200, which is what i'm trying to get down to now.

Well, I don't think you are looking at it as I am.
I would eat the number of calories (1700) now! Not subtracting the 500 from 1700. That way it is not a "diet" to lose weight. It is the number of caloreis I might be able to eat each day FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.
I meant this only as my example. I am having a hard time sticking to 1200. Can't do it for days on end and somehow psychologically when I eat a little more and tell myself that this is not a diet but what you are going to have to do forever it helps me to get my mind around the whole "eating too much food" issue.

hmmm....but surely that 1700 figure is the MAINTENANCE figure? as in, the figure where you won't GAIN OR LOSE?!

Exactly!!!
I weigh 225 this morning - it takes 2097 calories to maintain that weight
If I weighed 155 this morning - it would take 1716 calories to maintain that weight
Of course if I reduced the calories to less than 1700 I would lose much faster - much much faster.
But I keep bounceing back and forth from trying to eat 1200 calories a day to saying the hell with it and eating MORE that 2097 caloreis a day. I would be better to just try and stick around 1700 or less.
I know this is a weird way to look at it. Must be me because no one here ever looks at it this way - at least I don't think so - only those who might have lost all that they want to and are maintaining.

I love chinese food and miss it terribly. Here's a little tip: most chinese restaurants have a 'diet' menu where you can order the dishes steamed. I always get the steamed chicken and vegetables and order the sauce on the side so I can control how much I put on.

Breakfast: 2 waffles with peanut butter & jam 340
Snack: Crackers and a Slim Jim 400
Dinner: Ate @ Chili's-- Cajun Chicken Pasta
& Garlic Toast 900
Totaled out at 1640 calories for the day. My maintenance calories is app 2000-2200. So I maybe ended up with a 400 to 500 calorie deficit.
Not the healthiest day in terms of WHAT I ate... but sometimes I just settle for the fact that my calories aren't going overboard.

ohhh!!! i see what you're saying now! so basically what you've done is look at how many calories you need to maintain your goal weight, and cut down to that! i think that's a good idea in that it'll be easy to maintain for life when you get down to 155...but on the other hand, as Lady said, it takes a LOT longer.
another way of doing it is what i'm doing. my goal weight maintenance level is roughly 1600 calories. at the moment i'm eating 1200. so you're saying, how are you going to bridge the gap when you get to 119? well...the answer is EXERCISE!!!!!!!! at the moment i do very little; when i reach my goal weight i intend to do A LOT MORE and this will allow me to increase my calories too!!!!

yeah, sometimes i settle for that fact too! i may not have stuck to my 1200 yesterday but at least things are getting a little more under control now. i mean, i still HALVED my calories from what i had been eating in my two week binge!
and remember...maintaining is waaaay better than gaining!!

i wasnt saying YOU ate 3000 cals.... just picked it out of thin air...
i see how you arrived at the 1200 cals... makes sense.. if you are having a hard time going back to 1200 cals... maybe you need to do it gradually.... like 1600 cals, then 1500 then 1300 then 1200.... over the course of a week or two.... sure it may take longwer to loose the weight.... but it will be more comfortable for you... and you wont feel so bad about eating more than 1200 cals...
i know a lot of times (for me) the distinction between 2000 and 2100 cals is a HUGE line! it may not seem like i am eating much more (or less) but it is a line... and i believe its mostly a psycholocical line!
i hope you are doing better today
hugs

hey jenn...well actually i probably was eating around the 3000 cal mark for a couple of weeks, before i started dieting again!
you're right, maybe 1200 is a bit of a shock to the system, but for the past 2 days i've been eating 1500-2200 cals, which is quite a dramatic cut-down...but i do want to lose 7 lbs by christmas, so i think cutting down to 1200 is probably a good idea!
it's not that i find it hard to eat that amount, or that i get hungry or anything...it's just that food (chinese and cereal!) is quite tempting at the moment when i'm stressed out with work!
but i'm sticking with the diet today, for sure...i can do this!!

you make sure you get the right nutrients. Make sure you get enough protein, enough good carbs, enough monounsaturated fats (stay away from the saturated stuff) and take a multivitamin, if you don't already.

ugh, i know! how many calories are you eating at the moment, Lee? and how do you plan to increase the calories when you reach your target weight?
my plan is to increase the calories but at the same time significantly increase the exercise...right now i do none (apart from walking around school :) )

Well, I was doing about 1500, but I have to start dropping a little now.
As for how I'll increase calories when I get to goal, I'm not really sure. Knowing me I'll probably just eat a bunch more veggies or maybe allow myself a little bit bigger lunch than I usually have and most likely, if I find I'm deficient a few calories any certain day, I'll eat a baked potato or an extra sandwich or something. Getting to goal is probably going to be even harder than losing because I'm going to have to constantly seek a balance, you know? Although I won't 'obsess' as much as I do now. I'm sure I'll still weigh myself every day and if I start to gain, I'll back off a little and if I start to lose too much, I'll increase.
It's gonna be a science, that's for sure, lol
