 ok here is a question...

I've been a lurker here in the shadows for a while... and all my weight loss I did on my own, using my own basic system (which in retrospect might have been a little unhealthy), that basically consisted of eating less, exercising a lot more.

I am towards the end of my journey, having dropped 60 lbs from 240. But I don't FEEL or look thinner to myself all that often. Occaisionally I'll have a good day and be in a good mood, and I will think, "gee, I do look pretty good," but the rest of the time I am still freaking out about what my intake is.

And I know my mom is getting a little worried, as overprtective as she already is- that I am not eating enough. So my question is, in a nutshell- while I have always eaten pretty healthy, is it possible that I could be getting an eating disorder of some kind? And if so... how would I really know?

It's one of those things where I have been eating less, but once in a while if I eat just a little more than I am now used to, I feel too guilty and kinda go nuts. Then there is the whole issue of binging that I won't even get into. But since I feel like I am never getting thinner, even though I must be- how will I know if I am going too far with trying to cut the fat? I just feel like I might never be satisfied...

I am 20 yrs old male, 180 lbs, 6' 0"
At 18, I was 240 lbs.

I`m not an expert but your post made me want to respond....My one suggestion is for you to print out your post and take it along with you to your doctor, any doctor would be able to see your concerns and then guide you in the right direction so that you have a healthy life.....Good Luck, leanbutt

Hi,

As leanbutt said, you should address your concerns with a qualified health professional. A doctor will be able to tell whether to be concerned about eating disorder, and they'll be able to guide you in the right direction.

Here are some web links to general information on warning signs of eating disorders:

im not sure about the eating disorder but you probably feel like a smaller fatter version of yourself because you didnt weight train...my guess is that you lost some muscle mass along the way and am not entirely happy with the newer you...maybe thats one thing you can look into also.

Hi there. It's really hard to tell whether or not you do have an eating disorder based on what you've told us. You are at a fairly healthy weight right now, and as GM mentioned, it may just be the fact that "you are a thinner version of your old self," since, as you admitted, you did not exactly lose the weight in the healthiest of ways (I'm not sure what you meant by "eating less and exercising more").

What are you goals exactly, in terms of personal appearance (aka, flatter abs, bigger chest, looking good in a suit, etc.)? Sometimes, its all a matter of knowing what we really want, to be able to pin down satisfaction.

About feeling guilty about eating too much at times, I think a lot of people can relate to that, and it does not necessarily mean that all these people have eating disorders. In today's society, certain foods/eating too much have been promoted to be as bad as poison almost, and it has definitely affected our perception of food as a whole.

I would also suggest that you see a health professional. The diagnosis of eating disorders have objective physical and laboratory findings as well (although usually in the later stages). Yes, their diagnoses are not only based on apparent behavioral 'problems,' which could just be in some cases, extreme deviation from normal. It would be good to see your physician even if just to put your mind to rest that your behaviour is still within normal, and not truly pathologic (diseased) .

One thing going for you against having an actual disorder is the very apparent conscious awareness of a possible problem in your part. A lot of individuals with such disorders are either totally unaware that there is a problem, or if they are, are not as ready to admit of its existence like you are.

I forgot to mention that seeing a health professional can also help in sorting out other probable causes for your symptoms - for instance, depression, adjustment disorders, etc.
