 no patience
Author: Soon2bThin

I think one of my biggest problems with losing weight is the amount of time it takes. I just want to be at my goal NOW, but I know it won't happen. Is this a problem with anyone else and does anyone have any advice that can help me? Thanx!

I have always believed that patience is not a virtue.

But it is necessary in many circumstances and weight loss is one of them. I dealt with the waiting by concentrating on making permanent changes to my lifestyle I could stick with forever instead of focusing on what the scale said. I always thought I would just do the best I could and let my weight settle at whatever number those changes resulted in. I never really thought I would lose enough weight to reach what the charts say is a healthy BMI but as I lost weight I found I could eat a little less without feeling like I was starving. Exercise became easier with time too.

Remember you are going to have to change your lifestyle forever if you are going to lose weight and keep it off. Forever is a long time, there is no point in rushing things.

I used to be very impatient. The one thing that helped me more than anything was to create a routine. I've started working out on a schedule and plan it out. It gets scheduled on my calendar and everything.

I even get up and eat the same thing every morning, which may seem boring to some, but the routine keeps me focused on my goals, and keeps me actively participating in my weight loss effort instead of just winging it and hoping I still lose weight. I'm not sure why this helps with impatience, it just does for me.

I agree with Pianolady on the routine thing. I eat the EXACT same thing for breakfast every morning, and almost the same thing for lunch and dinner every day. Of course, this varies if I am away from home but I learned to adjust to that as well. On a normal basis, however, I feel that when I don't need to think about losing weight as often (because there is already a routine you follow at all times) you kinda forget you're even trying to lose weight. And then I step on the scale and I see a loss and it all comes back to me. Wanting to lose weight has become a PART of me, not just a goal I have to always think about or otherwise I'll forget. I think that once you give ur new lifestyle some time, it will be less frustrating and you will realize this is a forever-change. When you'll see some major weight losses, I think it will be easier to deal with the whole patience issues. At least that's how it was for me.

I dunno if this helps at all... :/

I understand where you are coming from; this is the way I try to look at it:

Being inpatient about getting to the 'GOAL' weight is like wanting to rush through your life and die.

If you are accepting the theory of a "lifestyle change," then removing the weight is not race to the "finish line." The "goal weight" is only minor milestone along the way. So settle back, and live your life here and now! If you only have your eyes fixed on the "finish line" you are missing out on the beauty of life that is going on all around you.

Settle down, take a deep breath, enjoy the ride, and when you do think about the future--think about the things you would like to accomplish BEYOND reaching your goal weight--that is, by far, more important.

Read my favorite quote (below) and hold it in your heart.

Maybe you could give an old girl a helping hand here :)? Tell me again where you're at, where you started and what you're doing? Maybe we can come up with some short term goals that better suit your nature.

Thanx for everyone's advice!
Otta- I feel like a failure saying this but I am higher than I was when I started dieting. I weigh 124.6 now and want to get down to 110. I need help in any way possible and would appreciate anything!

Have you been eating less and moving more?
I read on another board (frugal housewives I think) fill your plate as you normally would then put back a scoop of everything. Then take another scoop of vegetables. Sounded like a good way to start to me.

I workout a lot, it's the eating that is my problem. I love food sooo much.

>I workout a lot, it's the eating that is my problem. I love food sooo much.<

As I see it, you are going to have to end your "love affair" with food (by "food" I suspect you are talking about the high calorie/high fat stuff).

Unless you re-program your mind to think of food simply as fuel for your body, and not some kind of "recreational drug," you are setting yourself up for weight loss failure, and continued disappointment every time.

You can still enjoy any and all foods (pizza, ice cream, etc) occasionally and in moderation, but first you've got to get your priorities straight.

The fact is...you are CHOSING to eat junk food knowing you will gain weight. When you decide that your health and a lean body are more important than that Big Mac, you will CHOSE that too, and all the hard work that comes with it. Just "wanting" to lose weight and get healthy will never be enough to make it happen--no matter how hard you wish.
