I am sorry to hear you hurt your back, that stinks! I can relate to your feelings of guilt. This week my knees have been bothering me, and I decided to take a day off of exercise. It was hard, I felt like I should have been doing more. But you DON'T want to mess with your knees OR your back!

it actually takes quite a while for body composition to change, providing you eat the same diet, to notice time taken off of exercise...for example, in 4-6 weeks off of weight training, strength decides to spiral downwards, and size soon follows...interestingly body fat composition remained virtually unchanged in this study which tested for this sort of thing your asking...so in other words you may feel mentally guilty, but not only will it do no harm, but a week off is often welcomed by your body and can actually help you in the long run.
