 nightime eating, any suggestions???

I know myself that while I sit at home at night it is a good idea to not indulge in snacks after a certain time and I`m pretty good with this...
My ? is for when I do a karate class and from the time I practice prior to class and then do an hour fairly intense activity class, once I come home at 9:30pm I`m hungry...
I don`t want to undo my efforts from karate by eating the wrong kinds of snacks. I will usually have something like a bowl of whole wheat cereal but it does tend to get boring as far after work out snacking goes...
Typically this what my eating habits are for the day(I don`t count calories but write what I eat)

For ex: today was

Breakfast: coffee, bulgar with 1tbsp raisins and 1/4 of 2 % milk
foolowed by a good cardio work out for 40 min from warm up to cool down.
snack was a glass of orange juice.
lunch was a bowl of homemade defatted turkey, pasta and vegetable soup
snack was 4 triscuits

dinner was lean roast beef in beef broth serve on 1/2 italian bun with raw veggies like cucumber, radishes, green pepper and carrots
( I was going to omit the bun and have rice on the side but made the switch knowing I was going to karate class and hadn`t had bread in quite a while and the bun was sooooo fresh looking)

snack after karate was low fat microwave popcorn(2 cups popped)
I know it`s not the best nutrition possible but basically today was an ex and it`n not always like this with the roast beef and bread...We had to go to a meeting with our son teacher and knew it would be quicker to prepare...O.K. I`m blabbing again, any suggestions?

I take Hungar. I'm usually starving when I get home from class. I make a protein shake with yogurt, water or soy milk, a banana, strawberries and some protein powder. It's very filling and has all the nutrition you need after an intense workout. I think....Ang

I have the shake also. I choose Vanilla Protein shake as I know if I am bored, I can add some Cappacino powder to it or fruit and make it different. That and taking a fibre tablet to make doubly sure I feel full so I won't go snacking. The high protein shakes are really good if you do a lot of evening exercise and nice to have just before you go to bed. Stops the tummy rumbles. :)

YOu can eat high GI foods after exercise..infact this is the only time you should eat high GI foods....so have a handful of lollies as a treat, or rice crackers, or rice, or yep, bread!...dont feel bad, you have just depleted your glycogen levels and your bodies intention of that food is to restore muscle glycogen and liver....infact after cardio and weights alike, a typical good nutrition is protein (i guess thats optional depending on your needs), glucose of some sort (eg lollies, gatorade, something sugary or even plain table sugar, teaspoon or so) and a high GI carb like a bit of bread...whilst you do have to add these calories into the daily equation, be wary that none of the 'sweet' or 'carb' foods go to fat, they restore what your body has lost...infact its much better for you than the whole grains after exercise.

forgot to add that milk is a definate no no after exercise..milk litterlly takes hours to digest and your body needs nutrition immediately....the protein shake IN WATER or something high GI with a banana is a good idea.

So milk is a no no, are fruits such as apple, pears, peaches o.K?
I can`t eat bananas they cause major soars in my mouth and give major stomach pain...
The shake sounds good but knowing myself it is not a route I will go...I stick to homemade foods and don`t buy the nutrition and protein shakes...
GyMMack you mentionned protein so I take it that if I was to snack on things like chick peas, lupini beans etc that would also be o.k.?
The other night I snack on baby carrots, havarti cheese and hot peppers so I guess cheese is out?

Sorry for all the ? Just trying to figure this out while "I`M downsizing" he,he,he Thanks for the input...Leany

I am searching for the same answer. One night a week I get home from tennis at 8 and I'm ravenous and physically and mentally tired because I've run 5 miles earlier in the day and spent the afternoon driving my kid to an out of town tennis club, then been to a tennis team practice for 90 minutes for me.

I have sabotaged many good nutrition days between 7-10PM. But I think I'm conquering it, finally.

When I first started this journey I recognized physical or mental tiredness as a trigger to overeating. Night time eating was my biggest problem. Recognizing the problem helped. I know I am not strong enough to not eat between dinner (6:30) and bedtime. I have convinced myself I can't sleep if I'm hungry.

So I allow myself 200 calories, approximately, after dinner. One day a week, usually Sundays because as a kid we would have huge Sunday dinners, I have a "dessert" after dinner.

The healthiest snack I have found is cereal, but I agree that it is boring, and then you don't feel like having it for breakfast.
However, I feel virtuous when I do have the cereal. I'm into special K with strawberries that I sometimes dress up with a spoonful of soy nuts and raisins. When I'm frozen I do cream of wheat with milk in the microwave and mix it with applesauce and sometimes dried papaya, etc. My most common snack is a sugar free klondyke bar which is 180 calories and quite large and covered with chocolate which works for me. It's so hard. Just last night I'm eating the bar, watching just one hour of tv and there is this advertisement for fried chicken that looked good. A lot of nights I have to do tough love and just tell myself that no matter how much I eat I will never be full. I am rational enough to know that I will regret overeating, the minute I do it. And the last bite will come. And I remember the uncomfortable feeling I would get after overeating.

Your daily diet looked exemplary to me. If you can eat like that most days you will be very thin very soon.

Your diet looked great except for the 2% milk. Why havn't you switched to non fat yet? Is there something I don't know? I'm just starting out.

Actually it is farely easy for me to eat in that manner on the days my hubby is working and the kids are in school, It`s when the gang is home I get into trouble!!! That example is basically what I eat with lunch alternating between sald with tuna, or a pre made frozen entree that is less then 300 cal...Dinner though I am proud to say is usually much better planned and healthy since january...But like I said on the days hubby is home and have a hand in the planning of "What`s for dinner" I have to compromise a bit....I sometime wounder if I`m actually eating enough when I do a morning cardio work out and then a 1hr karate class in the evening...hmmmm? Oops I forgot, mid morning snack is more often the actual fruit then the juice I usually grab the juice if I`m in a rush and want to make sure I get sometehing...

Well there is a very good reason why I haven`t switch to less then 2% milk...The most milk I will actually have in a day myself is about 1/2 cup and mostly get my dairy thru yogourt and cheese because for some reason my body doesn digest milk properly and if I feel like having a full glass of milk because I crave it I have to dilute it with water so normally it is not everyday that I have milk, my kids on the other hand are like calf and drink milk at breakfast and dinner time and before bed but since the 2 of them are actually underweight for there age and hight I really don`t want to go to the skim milk portion of it and feel that the 2% milk is right for their age.....
I have cut fat intake by switching to extra virgin olive oil that i use in a pump type spray bottle when I need it. And also make my own salad dressing that uses more vinegar then the olive oil and I make it a point to measure an allowed amount of Tbsp of dressing for a big salad(lunch)....I think I`m actually pretty good with the fat intake and when I cut down on having bread with every meal I automatically got rid of extra fat..(one of those who like bread on their butter kindda thing) Well I`m blabbing...Thanks for your input....

Oh Thanks. I didn't realise that. Though I may pass a little as I take sports waters during the gym and drink plenty in fluid form so I think that may be enough to replace what is lost. It is more the fructose type of sugar I think in the drinks.

I had been avoiding it as I had heard that it was converted to fat. But I guess that is only when your starving the body of dietary fats? I.e. canola in moderation etc.

The only fat I am taking is peanut butter sparingly on apples and then maybe fat in the french dressing I use on the salad--though it is supposedly 98% fat free.

Brain fog at the moment...but i do get the occasional small amount of fat with chicken and meat when I have that instead of sirimi.

Yucky tasting things????? I LOVE CHICKPEAS AND LUPINIS...I love them to the point of overdoing it when I add them to salad and stuff, my guests complains he,he,he...When I used to work shift work, coming home at midnight and starving I would often open a can of chickpeas add a little italian salad dressing and voila I felt like I was eating a gourmet meal...I know I have weird taste ....Now I leave a can of chick peas (or if I have time I soak and cook the real things)in the fridge and will serve 1/2 cup with a bit of seasonning no salad dressing this time and still feel like I`m eating a gourmet snack!!! They are nutty tasting, did I say I love the taste of them???? LOL , When I first met my hubby my favorite snack of the time (I go thru phases) was a toasted dill pickle and mustard sandwich...I did the opposite of the norm in that I ate normal once I got pregnant !!!! Haaa FRENCH CUISINE he,he,he.....Gym thanks for all your input and support, for the first time last night I didn`t mind telling hubby how much I weight and he is very proud of moi...
