I need come tips on how to get out of the night eating habit. I eat sensibly during the day and then after I clean up the dinner dishes--All h-ll breaks loose. I just get so "snacky" at night. I know that I would have my weight loss goal of 45 lbs licked of I could get this under control--Thanks Debbiesue

I snack at night too. But I plan for it. Snacking at night is a longtime habit that I just can't break, nor do I really want to, so I make sure my late-night munchies are included in with my calories for the day. If you want a snack at night, have one. But just try and make sensible choices.
What do you normally snack on?

Lee said it perfectly. If you opt for 1500 calories, divvie them up so that you have 300 or 400 left for evening. I did. I eat all day long. Like food, yup, very much.

This is just my opinion, but I see nothing at all wrong with eating at night. In fact, the later at night you eat the longer your metabolism will run while you're sleeping.
Just a theory I happen to agree with.
Your body doesn't know what time it is, it will process food eaten at midnight just the same as it would with food eaten at noon. However, some people see late-night eating as a 'sabotage' on their healthy-eating plan and go ahead and eat junk because they feel they've already blown it by eating that late in the first place.
"Well, I'm eating too late, may as well have a big fat sandwich slathered with mayo or a half of a pizza since I've already blown it."
lol
I used to be the same way. I'd eat big huge bowls of pasta, casseroles, potato chips, you name it. But now I eat healthy foods and as I said in my other post, I include my late-night munchies in with my daily calories. And yours was a good idea of dividing up the calories and saving yourself a certain amount. I do that too, so I can go ahead and eat my late-night snack without feeling guilty.

hmmm....i'm not sure...although your body does process the food you eat at whatever time, the problem is, obviously you don't burn as many calories when you're sleeping as when you are awake and active, and so your body doesn't expend the calories you eat late at night as well as it would if you ate them say, at 7 o clock. but then on the other hand, i guess a calorie is a calorie, and maybe it doesn't make any difference when you eat, it's more to do with how much you eat! lol....oh i don't know.
but yes, if you do enjoy snacking late at night, i think you should just incorporate your snacks into your daily calorie intake, as someone already suggested, and also, make your snacks healthier and lower in calories. for example you could make a fruit salad, or you could snack on low-fat popcorn, or something like that?
hope this helps, good luck!

There are lots of different theories and I partly agree with most of them. Yes, I agree that when you eat late at night and then go to sleep that you're not as active, of course, as when you're awake. But your body will still process the food all the same, one way or the other. If you eat healthy foods, regardless of what time it is, it's not going to just 'sit there' and go nowhere. It will still be processed by your body.

If you exercise during the day, your metabolism will be efficient enough to burn even the foods you eat late at night.

I eat a lot of salads. I'll eat those at night too. Or I'll have some air-popped popcorn spritzed with butter spray and sprinkled with cheese flavoring. Or I'll have a wrap - I wrap lean meats and/or veggies up into a whole wheat tortilla and munch away.

I was craving ice cream a few weeks ago, late at night. Instead, I got a cup and a half of mixed fruit (pineapple, mellons, grapes and strawberries). I was not in the mood for fruit, but as soon as I took a couple of bites, it changed my mind. My taste buds have adapted to the new lifestyle and the fruit was the real snack that I wanted. Sometimes you have to trick your cravings.
I also eat baby carrots as snacks. Low calorie and filling. Although, I'm not sure that would satisfy an ice cream craving.
