I think I know what you're talking about. Hummus is just mashed up chickpeas, or garbanzo beans, with olive oil added. It is a Middle Eastern dish I think, at least I know I had it for the first time in a Middle Eastern restaraunt. There are many varieties available, with different spices and herbs. It contains a lot of protein, and tastes great on pita bread, but I was dissappointed at the amount of fat it contains, (due to the olive oil I'm sure, since chickpeas themselves are practically fat free. But at least olive oil is a "good" fat...) Anyway, in moderation as a spread or appetizer, it is a healthier choice than, say, french onion or Ranch dip!

When making Hummus, this is how I make it, In a blender or food processor add I can chickpeas well rinsed, I clove garlic(or to taste), sesame seeds(or 1tbsp tahinin which is the sesame seed paste) 1 tbsp of lemon juice, 2tsp cumin(or less),a few drops of hot pepper sauce and to get the right texture I add either a bit of chicken stock or water....You do not need the oil at all...

That sounds good, I'll have to try it. I'd only looked at the already made versions in the "gourmet" (ha!) section of the grocery store. In fact, I have a can of garbanzos in the cabinet right now. I think I know what I'll have with lunch! :-)

I forgot to ask, are the sesame seeds neccesary for the right taste and texture? I love them, but if I could leave them out, I would. Have you ever done it this way? And do you have any "soy stuff" rcipes. I recently discovered soy, and really like it, but the only stuff Ive tried is the already made stuff in the freezer section, Boca burgers and so forth. Do you have any ideas how to make stuff at home, that tastes good?

I will tap in my recipes and see I find some for you, can`t really think ahead...I will share this info though, I have tried making the veggies burgers at home but the amount of things needed, the price of the ing, the flavor ...let`s just say that I gladdly pay the price for ready made burgers....In canada, at the A+P store they have the veggie burgers made by "Yves" veggie cuisine, usually around $2,49 for 2 patties...They are very good...I also buy soya nuts to have as a snack, the butter toffe ones are a very nice special treat when I crave sugar....

Ooooooh... butter toffee.... mmmmm. I don't suppose I'd still get the same benefits if they were also chocolate coated? Hee hee hee!

Haven`t seen those but they do come in a variety of flavor such as cheese coated, sour cream and onion, B.B.Q. and plain roasted etc. They are a lot cheaper then peanuts yet give you the satisfaction of eating something crunchy....In Canada, Zehrs is where I buy them....They are usually with the bulk foods section

Well you really don`t need to eat soy products to lose weight if you stick with lean meats and normal portions and stuff....The soya nuts were for snack idea, well in the past while looking up for healthy snack idea on the web, I came across quite a few recipes foor chickpea crunchies....One that we like is simple, basically you soak the rinsed and drain chickpeas in a light terriyake sauce or seasonning of your choice, place them in a single layer on a non stick pan and bake them at 250F until the outside are crunchy but the inside is still somewhat soft because they still keep cooking once you take them out of the oven...Just stir them often ...I would give a time but it depnds on the seasoning and oven...A dehydretor works good also...

Oh God! Don't EVEN be embarrassed about THAT! Ha! Ha! You're talkin' to the Queen of Flatulence here! Let's just say I had to learn how to "discreetly" leave a crowded room. It became such a joke in my family, it's hardly embarrassing to me anymore. I've gotten used to being the "butt" of all jokes! Maybe I should have come up with a different web name.
Seriously though, I don't know of a substitute for soy, since it's kind of like a sub for meat... I use Bean-O, and Lactaid now, that helps tremendously with the bloating and other joys. It might not be an allergy you have. Soybeans contain a lot of fiber, which is great, but fiber rich food takes longer to digest. (Actually, fiber does not digest, it passes through.) The food sits in your intestine longer and produces *gas*! If you're not used to getting that much fiber on a regular basis, you may have those unpleasant side effects for a while. They do eventually go away, as your body gets used to the extra fiber, which, may I add, I think we ALL need to increase our fiber intake! There's also all kinds of enzymes the body needs to break fiber rich food down, some people don't have these enzymes at all, or some people lose them as they grow older. That's all Bean-O and Lactaid are, really, the lacking enzymes. So give it a try. The benefits of soy are well worth it I think. I had worse than usual symptoms when I first changed my eating habits. (I won't say 'diet', that makes it sound temporary, and this is for keeps!) I think it was due to all the good, real food I was eating instead of the over-processed, "enriched", broken down, almost-already-digested-for-you crap that I had been eating. I had to ease into it slowly. First, I bought a box of cereal containing the highest amount of fiber I could find, it happened to be Fiber One. It doesn't taste GREAT, but it's tolerable as cereal, and not bad at all on salads, yogurt or with fruit. It has a LOT of fiber, low cal and fat, and I gradually started adding it to everything, then I started increasing the amount of fiber rich foods I was eating, until I was getting my recommended amount of fiber for the day. (My Dietpower software helped me to keep track of it.) Now, I get all the fiber I need, and hardly have those little *problems* at all anymore! (And not even one glass of Metamucil!) :-)
Signed, Lady Poo (Ha! Ha!)

Like Fattybutt said, soy is not necessary, unless you're playing with becoming a vegetarian. I just like it. I miss not having pan fried breakfast sausage, and hamburger meat, and some soy products give me what I crave without all the fat and calories. But I still have my lean chicken twice a week, too!

Hey Lady poo..heehee.. I had allergy tests done on me a while back and found out I was allergic to soy products.. I've tried beano but that doesn't seem to work for me.. I've tried other ones too.. I know what you mean about being the "butt" of jokes.. Hubby teases me constantly about it..

Okay, definite allergy, my bad. :-( I guess getting on my soapbox about fiber was pretty pointless, then huh? Ha ha! But like we said, soy's not a necessary element of a healthy diet, just adds variety. I don't even know if all the hype about it is really true anyway. I've read a lot about the "benefits" of soy, but a well balanced diet and exercise is a more sure thing than any touted benefits of a particular bean! :-)

CAKELADY,
What is that dietpower software you were talking about? Is it something you can download off the internet or something you have to buy? I have a hard time calculating calories, and fiber and whatever else you need to calculate and was wondering if that software would help..

Oh yeah, Baby! I got Dietpower after watching a show on The Discovery Channel about a weight loss challenge. The guy that was "in the lead" was using it. You can download a free two week trial at www.dietpower.com. I like it because it's like a journal of everything I eat and every exercise I do. It will set up your calorie budget depending on your present weight, age, etc. according to what weight you want to get to, and by when. It will even tell you if your goals are realistic or not! Then just by entering in the food you eat and the exercises you do it will calculate how many calories you've consumed/burned each day. As you lose weight, your calorie budget will change each day to keep you losing weight slow and steady, the healthy way! It has a huge database of foods and exercises, but if something's not in there, it's really easy to add your favorites. I can't say enough good things about it, I'd never have gotten where I am if I'd had to continue writing everything down. The only thing I don't like is that, to make it totally accurate, you have to weigh yourself every day or every other day. I don't like being a slave to the scale, but once you use the program for a while, you understand why it is important to keep it accurate. It will begin to calculate your actual basal metabolic rate, so that you know how many calories you burn daily... just living. That takes a week or so before it gets dead on, but I love it. I weigh now about once a week, now that it's "learned" my metabolism. There's also a huge dictionary of terms in Help. I learned hella info just reading the Help section. After the two week trial, it's $49.95 for the program. (The two week trial is the whole program, but it has a lock on it so that it won't work after two weeks. You're actually paying for the "key" to "unlock" it.) That may sound like a lot, but your talking to a real tightwad here, and I have to say it's the best 50 bucks I ever spent! Anyway, as I've said, I love it. It will break down your nutrients, your carb/protein/fat ratio, even how much water you're getting! So that makes it still useful after the weight is lost, just for watching your nutrients, and checking your ratio! My friend started using it just to see how healthy her diet really was, and got hooked too. (She's 5'5", 120 lbs, and an aerobics instructor, so that was for sure, NOT for weight loss!) But I've lost over 20 pounds, just watching what I eat, and exercising. I just never knew how many calories I was getting until I started logging them, and this made it so easy to do that! The best and most important part is that it puts YOU totally in control. It's all the nutrition and exercise info you need in one place. It makes it so easy, it's great! I'll shut up, just go check it out! Download the free trial, you'll see what I mean!

I took a look at Fitday. From what I could tell, it's similar. I'd have to use it for a week or so to tell if it adjusts to your personal metabolism the way Dietpower does. The only difference I could tell really, and I may be wrong, but I don't think it calculates a calorie budget for you. It does give guidelines to follow, but you have to decide yourself your minimum and maximum calories for each day, and most people are not knowledgeable enough to know how many calories to consume to achieve a slow healthy weight loss. That's what Dietpower does for you. It sets a budget to follow for each day, to reach your goal weight, BY your goal date. And for me, it's been dead on for 3 months. But really, like I said, I'd have to use Fitday for a while to really get to know it. The best thing is, it's free! I think JillG said she had used both for a time and preferred Dietpower over Fitday, but again, Fitday is free. I recommend you either ask the board if anybody out there has used both, and which they preferred, or download the free trial of Dietpower and log on to Fitday to compare them for yourself. Just glancing at FD, I felt that DP was more user friendly, but I've been using it for 3 months now too. I'm sure either one would be a great help to your program.

Cakelady & Pam,
I definitely prefer the dietpower software, I tried fitday, but it didn't seem as easy to use as dietpower. I tried fitday after I tried dietpower, so maybe I was already a little biased. I bought the dietpower software too, It's so easy and its a snap to log your foods into. I would definitely try both Pam and decide for yourself. Jill
