I have been reading this site and like it. I am currently working at loosing 95lbs. On Jan 3rd I weighed 256lbs, so I am happy with how things are coming along. Now I weigh 245!! never thought that would sound good.
My problem now is how do I stay on track when I go visit family and when my family comes to visit. My husband and I do good with good food choices and working out, but when we go visit or they come visit it all goes back to bad food choices. We have to travel about 4-5 hrs, and they the same. When we visit my husbands family that is 10hrs away and that really messes up our healthy eating and it is like we always have to start over. And it takes days to get back on track after they leave or we leave.
I am tired of this cycle and need help with good food choices when traveling and how to stay on track. It seems my family and husbands family think get togethers is a time to pig out. What is wrong here.....
I just came back from visiting my sister and her family this weekend and on the way there we ate junk food and at her house and on the way back home. Now my parents are coming this weekend and I can not let this happen anymore.
does anyone else have this problem??

We recently went on a 6 hour trip to visit friends and family. Before the trip, I went shopping for healthy snacks like fresh fruit, nuts, dried fruit and bottles of water for in the van. Once I got there, I made sure to grab dessert plates instead of a regular dinner plate, so it looked like my plate was as full as theirs but my portions were smaller. I lost .5 lb that week, which was pretty good considering the foods were pretty fattening. ( we also went for walks after dinner to see how the neighborhood looks at this time of year) (any excuse to get out excersizing works)

It's tough when you're surrounded by a lot of people eating a lot of food. What works for me is strict portion control, but it took me some practice. Using small plates does help. Try taking very small servings of whatever's being offered, sometimes just a couple bites if there's a lot of different items, and then eat slowly. If you're at a restaurant, you can often just order an appetizer or a small salad, and don't be afraid to leave food on the plate. If possible, buy your own food in advance to eat on the road, or for snacks; most people don't consider this rude, especially if you offer to share. Like I said, it takes practice, but it does get a lot easier with time.

Some things that work for me--
1. Deciding ahead of time that I am up to this challenge and that I CAN BE SUCCESSFUL in any situation.
2. Realizing that other people really don't care what we eat.
3. Accepting that this is a lifestyle change for the long term--the only way I'll be able to maintain a lower weight permanantly is to permanantly change my eating habits.
4. Preparation is critical-I never let myself get too hungry and I make sure that there is always something that I can eat available. (I try to eat a yogurt, or fruit, or some cereal before I go to a restaurant--and decide what I will be eating BEFORE looking at the menu (if at all.)
5. Getting back to my good eating habits ASAP!!!! Instant forgiveness for error, loving myself enough to get back with the program are essential for me.
Hope some of this helps...
