I have heard rumors that exercising on the stairmaster acutally makes your butt bigger. Is this true?

I would "assume" that it puts the glutes in gear and makes them tighten up more so which would give the appearance of roundness. Also working the hamstrings helps to lift up the bottom as well. Of course I'd rather have a round tushie then a long flat one. Which I'm trying to shapen up the booty myself =)
This is just my opinion from the info I've read up on. Some others may have a better suggestion.

You won't experience too much muscle growth using a stairmaster. A small amount perhaps, but mostly what you will be doing is increasing endurance and aerobic fitness.
There are more myths concerned with losing fat, and gaining muscle than any other subject that I can think of.
If you are following a diet, and use the stairmaster a few times a week to burn calories, your ass certainly wont get bigger. Now if you dont eat less calories than you burn, yes it will get larger right along with everyother bodypart.
