I was wondering if it was okay for kids to drink diet soda/pop.. instead of regular.. I heard on the news that pop is the number one reason kids are so overweight these days. My kids don't have weight problems but I really don't want them to start having them either..

Well, I don't have any kids but I would venture to say that limiting their sugar intake is a good thing for a variety of reasons. I was never allowed to drink regular Cokes or Kool-Aid as a kid, thank goodness I never did, because that's just one LESS habit to break! I'd watch how much they drink though unless it's caffeine free also...no need in having them bounce off the walls!

It's certainly a *better* choice - but I don't think that makes it a *good* one. Water is much better, SF kool aid if they're needing the favor, even no cal flavored waters like Fruit2O. There is nothing healthy in a diet coke - zero nutritional value and the verdict is still out on how bad aspertaine is for children and adults.

Dawn is right. Sugar is bad for kids but the caffeine is probably just as bad. I would say caffeine free diet coke would be the best way to go! HA...even though you can barely call it coke after taking away the 2 most important ingredients!!!

i give my kids diet pop, just watch and make sure they dont have a reaction to the aspertame. there are alot of people allergic to it.
BUT... make sure they brush teeth good ... pop eats the enamel off your teeth ESPECIALLY babyteeth, then they can rot faster. my kids are allowed 1 pop a day. (ages 7 & 12) if you can get them to use a straw it will help avoid pop hitting front teeth. :)

I've heard many evils about diet pop, and NutraSweet, Saccharin, etc., that they put in it and their effects on children.
However, I also heard that children would literally have to drink gallons of the stuff each day for it to cause problems.
I finally switched from regular to diet when my 12 YO son was drinking 6-8 cans a day! It's been a year and both of my kids (8 YO daughter too) are fine.

I don't know about diet sodas, but my dentist has said soda is bad for your teeth. Could be the sugar, but I've always had the impression that there was more to it than that.

I don't have kids. but I would probably give my kids natural stuff, like milk (calcium for bones/teeth) or juices (vitamins). Maybe give them regular soda as a treat once in a while. They are kids you know :)
I think soda is one of the main reasons why I became so overweight. I just drank it by the gallons as a kid and an adult. Hmmm... maybe I can blame mom and dad for this...
take care,

The verdict is out on aspertame. My hubby is a dentist & will absolutely not allow our kids to have more than one soda a day. He won't let them have diet soda at all! Some studies try to link aspertame with some childhood cancers. It's just not worth the risk to us. Also, soda has phosphoric acid, which is not good for the bones. Just my two cents. Hope this helps.
