Lynda, welcome to the board! You've came to a great place for motivation and ideas! Congrats on quitting the smokes, your right if you can give them up you can lose weight. I'm no expert, I should be as many diets as I've been on but...The main things are drink lots of water, get excercise even if its walking, and eat healthy foods. I'll let someone else step in now. You are on your way...Congrats on a great decision..to get healthier! Becky

The first thought I had off the top of my head was to cut portions. Whatever you'd normally eat, just put some of it back. Eat less, move more.
And read back through this board. There are wonderful ideas here and inspiring stories.

Your first stop should be any internet site regarding the Food Guide Pyramid. This will outline healthy eating habits and portions for you.
I have seen a dietician for over 16 months now and it has been literally a godsend.

Hey Lynda~
I know how you feel. I first came to this board about 1.5 or so years ago. I've kept posting here because the people are so helpful, inspiring, and truthful. Just to let you know:
THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN'T DO
So, with that in mind, I would start moving around. Do anything you can to get an extra step of exercise in everyday. (If you go to the mall, park far from the front, walking to the store is better than parking right in front of the door!)
Try to get some personal exercise in, like go walking outside, get hooked up with a gym, and whatever.
Then, cut back on the calories you eat. Pick more protiens, veggies, fruits, and fibers. Stay away from fatty, sugary starchy foods. Those really pack on the pounds.
Hope I've helped some.

The USDA's Food Guide Pyramid Booklet, 1992 (updated 1996) PDF on the second link has a lot of useful information. Hope this helps & welcome!

Walking and portion control.
Try to walk as much as you can. If that 100 yards or 1 mile or whatever it is do it...twice a day if you can. Do a little bit more tomorrow and the next day. Keep going. Don't make excuses as to why you can't do it. Make plans so that you can do it. It may hurt. Of course it will...but in a couple of weeks it won't. Walking puts you in a frame of mind to think about how well you are doing! You know you're really working towards something.
And you don't want to waste all that good walking, so remember ortion contro. Read the food label. You'll be shocked. My favorite example of this is Cheerios. You know, the cereal. I love them!!! And when I measured what I consider to be one serving of Cheerios, I found out that General Mills calls that three servings!
So most often at night I would have two serving of Cheerios at night for a snack, and what the hell, Cheerios are healthy, right??? But I was really having six servings. Sometimes I'd have three bowls. THAT's NINE SERVINGs Of CHEERIOS. GEES! Little did I realize I could have fed the whole freaking Brady Bunch on my evening snack. No wonder I'm a porker!
Anyway, you'll fall off the wagon, just jump back on when you can, as quick as you can. Ken always says it's not what you eat 10% of the time (when you mess up) but what you eat 90% of the time (which should be your lifestyle).
By the way, you are rally smart to get your eating thing in check after quitting smoking. It took me 30 some poiunds to figure that out. And your right, if you can quit smoking you can do this weight loss thing no sweat (so to speak).
Good luck! Keep us posted!
